Helping Special Needs Kids in China

Hello! My name is Whitney and I am a 26 year old teacher.
This past April I moved to one of the poorest areas of China to work for 3 years with a local organization that helps orphans and families who have children with special needs. I thought I was fully funded when I moved out here, but I've realized that I have extra expenses that I hadn't planned on. This is a volunteer position and I need your help in order to keep doing my work!
I need to raise $400 more for my monthly expenses (for the next 2 and a half years). If you would like, you could give a one-time gift or you could become one of my monthly financial supporters.

I am currently training local teachers who are working in my organization on how to better teach our special needs students. These teachers are young and grew up in rural ethnic minority villages where they only received elementary or middle school education and where Mandarin Chinese (which is the language in which we teach in our program) is often spoken as a second language. In addition, this society tends to focus on punishing and belittling children in order to make them succeed and there is no such thing as a special education curriculum. Therefore, I am helping our teachers focus on encouraging our special needs children and helping these kids see their value even though the rest of their community doesn't. I am also in the process of creating a new special education curriculum for our program and I visit our town's orphanage twice a week. (The picture above is of me trying to give water to one of the orphans who is 10 years old and has brain damage, epilepsy, and cerebral palsy.)
