Help a homeless vet build a home!

Hello Everyone!

This is Garrett, he's a 35 year old disabled Marine Corps war veteran who's currently homeless. After receiving an unemployable rating from the VA, Garrett has had a rough go of it for the last few years. Both him and I served together in the Marines and we've been brothers since then. A few years back, Garrett got his disability rating, and since then has been living off of that for everything. Unfortunately, his previous credit card debt, normal bills, along with his habits, he doesn't usually have any money left over. This has made it practically impossible for him to get a house or an apartment as its extremely difficult to get enough money saved up for any down payment, or costs that come with purchasing a house or renting an apartment.

In recent years, he has actually been staying at my place in my woodworking shop in the garage outside. From time to time, he will go camping in the warmer months, or stay at a hotel/motel for a few days if its cheap enough. But for the better part of 2 years, he's been staying and living with me. And my wife and I think its high time he has a place for himself.

In the beginning of this year, we told him that he could build a shed/tiny home to live in in the back of our property. We have 5 acres of mostly woods, and so it would be set back from the road and fairly private and nice. We decided on a 12x16 gambrel style shed with a  loft, and then we purchased some plans online. My wife and I are firm that even though this is our property, this is going to be his home.

We've made some significant progress, my brother in law came up for a visit and he helped get a lot of it framed out with us. We've also had some help from our close friends. Currently we have the exterior sheathing on, and there is Ice & Water shield on the roof. Siding, windows, roofing and the exterior door are what's left.

I have the ability to pay for a lot of this project myself, and I've offered more than a fair share, but being a Marine, Garrett really doesn't like receiving charity, and he really  wants to accomplish this himself. I've  been there, we've all  been there, but we need to get this done and completed before winter sets in, and right now its just a shortage of funds that is keeping him from purchasing the materials he/we need to get this thing done.

That's why I wanted to create this fundraiser, so that he could see that so many other people out there care about helping, not just me. There is a lot of good out in the world, and a lot of people that are willing to help out by sending a few bucks his way to help him complete this project before the winter with good, high quality materials.

Your support and gift will mean pretty much the world to him, as he doesn't have much in the way of possessions. I've set the bar at $5k and we've already received some donations from local builders in the area, I believe if we meet this goal, he'll have enough to get this home built inside and out beautifully, along with some good interior furnishings. Anything extra, or past that number will definitely be used to pay off whatever remaining debt he has.

The goal is to have this thing built as soon as possible so that he can move in ASAP.

He already has a ton of physical support and a great network of friends that surrounds him to help him get this knocked out. Now he just needs a home.

God Bless,
Jon
