StreetLights Newspaper

43354194_1576080869927844_r.jpegI am currently in the setup and construction of StreetLights ,  a Street Paper  in digital and print formats highlighting the stories of the invisible people of our community and the organizations that serve them.  My goal is to create opportunity and a voice for disadvantaged, no/low-income, homeless, houseless, dispossessed and displaced  people while highlighting the inspiring stories and connecting to local Community Resources.  I plan to have impactful reporting on the millions of government and donated dollars in local, regional and national programs whose mission it is to end homelessness. I will also highlight successes equally.

At a dinner with a long lost relative recently, I received a fortune cookie that said

"Work with what you have, Where you are, Right Now!"

As a veteran of the advertising industry from newspapers and magazines to radio and tv and then a pioneer in the early days of Digital Marketing, I want to put my intellectual assets to work.  I no longer want my "Panhandling with a Purpose" to be my only income and outlet for my creative energy.  It is my goal to make a meaningful contribution to the community while serving the needs of the dispossessed and empowering the destitute.

The website TheStreetFairy.com  will be the central hub for the magazine, blog, newsletter sign up, grant writing, resource directory, back issue ordering, sponsorship opportunities and more.  The community will benefit from the storytelling and from the spotlight on those programs that collect donations in the name of ending homelessness.  Each issue will have an actionable story where community members can contribute in a meaningful way.  The website will also provide separate pages where community members can submit photos, stories, full feature articles, or just ideas for articles as well as kudos for a volunteer, service provider, or pretty much anyone they wish, relevant to our mission.

The StreetLights or Points of Light as I call them can benefit by becoming a vendor and distributing the print magazine at a profit and collecting tips in a micro-business opportunity.  I also believe that seeing and reading the stories of people like them that are succeeding, overcoming obstacles, removing barriers, recovering from everything will have a positive impact if in nothing less than providing a window of hope.

Support of this campaign will validate the creation, development and implementation of this project and would be a huge boost to my personal morale.  Since experiencing a complete breakdown of my wise mind and an attempt to end my life in 2014,  I have been in various stages of recovery for a few years now .    I haven't had many tangible moments of success because many of the barriers I have dealt with are invisible and seemingly mundane. I have worked very hard at returning to a valued role in society and building an enjoyable life worth living. Seeing this project come to fruition will provide tangible results and real successes I can show to my parents and adult children.

This project also allows me to utilize my Certified Peer Support Training   in bespoke way providing so much more than the meager salary I plan on.  Most importantly, this project goes beyond meeting my needs, it provides opportunity, and empowerment for others like me to have hope and see the results of living with intention.

The funds I am seeking will cover the fundamental needs for the first 6 months of publication.  By this reaching that benchmark,  I see sponsors, sales and contributions providing ongoing income to cover expenses and allow for reinvestment into the project possibly expanding services or geographical locations or supporting long format investigations.

Every penny, nickel and dime I collect makes a difference in my life.  Even if it's just enough to cover the cost of the water I distribute for the day, at least I was able to be a blessing to someone by providing life giving water and a warm smile.  Anything you are able to contribute, even a warm smile or supportive email,  will  go towards printing the first issue which I hope is 500 copies.  This project will go forward without any fundraising.  Because of the positive feedback, smiles and well wishes, I will be able to publish at least digitally no matter what, even if its using public WiFi  and printing out only 1 copy.
