Helping a refugee feel freedom
Donation protected
I am hoping to raise $1800 before November 25th, 2020 to help support a refugee friend. I have known and supported this person for the past 5 years. This amazing human fled their home country in 2013 to get away horrendous physical and emotional torture and abuse. They were 22 when they were forced to leave her home country.
They then had to spend the next 5 years within Australia’s punitive detention system on Nauru, and onshore here in Australia. During this time, they suffered further physical, emotional, and sexual abuse by guards working within our detention system. Finally, in 2018 my friend was released into community detention in Melbourne. They were given accommodation and a very small amount of money per month, but the Government denied her any work permit or Medicare card. This has been an incredibly difficult time.
The Australian Government have now decided, (during a pandemic), to give many asylum seekers and refugees here in Australia 6-month visas which will allow them to work here in Australia, and they will have Medicare cover. However, when this visa is granted, they will be forced to leave their current accommodation within 3 weeks to find their own housing and the small monthly allowance they currently receive will stop immediately. It is hoped the visa will be renewed again in 6 months, but we are uncertain.
In Victoria this will happen as soon now the 25 km COVID travel restriction is lifted. This is an impossible situation for many refuges/asylum seekers as their mental health prevents them from working and finding accommodation/work during this time of COVID will be extra difficult.
I want to help my friend get a fair start to this new journey. She is one of the strongest, kindest, and bravest women I have ever met. Luckily, we have managed to find free accommodation for her for the first couple of months, but she will need to find the money to pay bills, her phone and food until she finds work.
I know it is tough times for everyone right now. but if anyone can spare a bit of cash to raise this money to help my friend, I would be so grateful. No amount is too small…please.
With love and hope for a better future for ALL refuges and asylum seekers.
