This exciting and unprecedented level of protest activity has filled our abolitionist hearts, while draining our budget. 

The NLG Detroit/Michigan Chapter has been working non-stop, since late May, proudly supporting the movement in defense of Black lives.

Much of our work consists of:
1) training and providing Legal Observers for daily demonstrations in Detroit and across Michigan, 
2) coordinating and providing legal representation for hundreds of people arrested while protesting in defense of Black lives, 
3) litigating a civil rights case against the City of Detroit to halt its police attacks on demonstrators, and 
4) staffing a hotline for anyone arrested and/or harmed by police during the anti police-terror protests. 
 
Collaborating with allied organizations since the uprising began, NLG lawyers and other volunteer attorneys, activists, and legal workers have been putting in countless hours to assist and represent protesters.  This amazing movement legal work is accomplished with the coordination, training, and administrative support of our two staffers working day and night.  
 
We need your help to sustain this massive legal endeavor, and be ready for what's to come. We want the movement to keep growing stronger - to defund police, decarcerate our communities, and protect all Black lives - and we will defend you every step of the way.
 
COVID has made our main fundraising sources unavailable, so we are in dire need of donations. In addition to paying our staff, we have some basic operating expenses. To continue functioning at our current level of activity, we need to raise $20,000 by the end of this year. Please consider a monetary gift, of any amount, to support us in this work.
