This is a GoFundMe for Michelle Fink, a dear friend and colleague to many. The goal is to raise $7,000 to $10,000 to help Michelle through a very difficult time. Her doctor put her on permanent disability about six months ago and she is at risk of losing her house because her disability claim is taking so long to process.
As many of you know, Michelle had a tragic accident as a teenager and in the blink of an eye went from a normal active life as a high school athlete to being paralyzed from the waist down. Her life, at that point, produced a different future than one she had envisioned. Since that accident, Michelle’s resolve and independent spirit took her through a difficult adjustment to a “new” life. She succeeded, finished college, and became a respected teacher for thirteen years, inspiring students and colleagues alike.
Multiple back surgeries and upper body and shoulder injuries from constant use of a wheelchair made her chronic pain intensify. Fast forward to now, 30 years later. Her pain medication provides no relief and like many people who had to rely on opioids, she has to detoxify her body before a solution to her constant pain can be determined. In 2017, her condition convinced her doctor that she could no longer return to work. This has been a hard decision for Michelle.
This detoxification has magnified her difficulties. The constant pain diminishes her natural optimism. The process of detoxification clouds her mind so much that she cannot drive, limiting her independence until the opioids are out of her system.
The slow process to qualify for disability puts her in a financially precarious position and she fears losing her house. As her claim is being processed, Michelle has not received regular paychecks. Without a steady income, her house is at risk and the chance to recover her independence diminishes.
