Gary's Medical Fund

On November 16, 2017 Gary was found unconscious on the floor of his trailer. He was rushed to hospital in Nelson BC, and later flown to Trail, where it was discovered that a severe bowel infection and blood clot necessitated emergency surgery to remove 2/3 of his bowel. The weeks since the surgery have been a long, slow process of healing; with many ups and downs, and ongoing issues with malfunctioning ileostomy bags and wound care.

Despite the challenges, on December 21, 2017, Gary was discharged from the hospital and his sister-in-law Lori and sister Bonnie drove him down to Seattle, WA to begin the process of reintegration and getting set up with care in the USA. Gary was admitted into Harborview Medical Center on December 22, 2017, where there is a specialized ostomy unit uniquely qualified to care for Gary’s particular needs.

It’s hard to say exactly how things will progress over the next few weeks but we want to get Gary the care he desperately needs. Steps have been taken to get him on Medicaid but he cannot yet apply for Social Security due to being hospital bound and his insurance will not cover many of the things he’ll need.

He is not in any sort of condition to come home yet and the hope is to transition him from the hospital into a rehab facility, where he can learn to care for his ileostomy bag and get walking again. He will also need homecare, in the form of a visiting nurse, when he is discharged from the hospital or rehab facility.

We’ve set a goal of $5,000 to care for Gary’s immediate needs and to help get him back on his feet.  This money will be used for things such as:

• homecare nurse visits
• ostomy and wound care supplies
• wheelchair / scooter
• medical bills

Gary is a kind and gentle soul, who has been extremely brave in this horrifying situation.  He’s a bit of a lone wolf, a man who has quietly struggled with autism and depression but pushes on in spite of it all, doing what he can. Please help us to show him that he is not alone in this struggle.
