Sunshine and summertime are right around the corner and that means it is almost CAMP season! Last summer, Camp Sertoma in Clemson, South Carolina had the opportunity to provide blankets for every camper that came through the gates. The same company, Suntex, is willing to continue the project with us again this year!
Our campers come from a variety of backgrounds, each of them bringing their own story. Camp Sertoma is funded by Sertoma Clubs throughout the state of South Carolina to serve children who are economically disadvantaged or have a hearing or speech impairment.
After campers arrive, it does not take them long to start referring to camp as "home." Driving through the front gate and down camp road, instantly gives campers and staff alike, a sense of belonging and hope. There is no safer place than inside the gates of camp and as our campers realize that and experience unconditional love, they begin to open up and share their stories. Sending campers back to their homes will always be a difficult task, but we love them with all we've got for seven days and hope to send them back better than when they arrived. Whether they return to families, foster homes, children's homes or other places, we want campers to be able to carry a small piece of comfort and hope with them as they travel back outside of the gates.
The blankets give them just that. Some campers return year after year while some only get to come for a summer. Last year, as campers were taken into their cabins and shown their beds, giant grins spread across their faces as they were exclaiming, "Is that blanket mine?! Do I get to keep it?!" They were tucked in with their blankets every night of the week and when it came time to pack them up on Saturday, they made sure their blanket had their name on it and it got packed into the right car! They LOVED them and they were so proud of their blankets.
Our goal this summer is to raise enough money to provide a new set of campers with the blankets! When campers arrive, they will get to choose a bed, already made with love and a brand new blanket they will get to keep when they leave the following Saturday. Our hope is for campers to have a piece of Camp Sertoma with them 365 days a year. However, we need your help to make this happen! We have 240 campers each summer and, even at a discounted cost, that's a lot of blankets and a pretty penny. For camper safety, there are no pictures of campers with their blankets but I have added a photo of what the blankets will look like. The "I love you" sign language hand paired with the Sertoma International logo "S" and "Camp Sertoma" will be printed on each of the blankets at no additional cost. "I love you" is not a term used lightly inside camp's gates, but it is used often and with complete sincerity. Campers are consistently shown they are loved at camp, and what better way to send them off than with a blanket that will constantly remind them of that? Please join us in providing love and comfort to our campers by donating whatever you can to help provide these blankets.
