On the morning of October 8th, an electrical fire broke out in my family home of 20 years. My father, mother, brother, sister, and pets narrowly escaped, but the entire second floor of the house has been gutted by fire, smoke, and the discovery of asbestos. The first floor also suffered from water damage due to the firefighters putting out the flames.
My parents lost nearly everything they owned in their bedroom. 20 years worth of clothes, mementos, home videos, and photo albums are now gone. Similarly my brother and sister also lost most of their clothing and possessions. To add insult to injury, what possessions that weren’t lost to the fire ended up being contaminated by the exposed asbestos.
From what we know, it will take a month to gut the house down to the 2x4’s; and the actual rebuilding process is going to take anywhere from 6 months to a year.
Currently my family was able to have some temporary lodging at the local motel nearby the house for the next two weeks. I’ve began the search for rental properties as a long term solution for my family while the house will be rebuilt.
I was honestly humbled by the outpouring amount of love and support from neighbors, friends, acquaintances, colleagues, and strangers. It’s terrible what had happened, but in the end, I’m grateful that everyone is safe and alive. We are going to be rebuilding everything emotionally and physically.
As of right now, I have the goal set at $5,000 as a starting point. Amongst the aftermath, it’s difficult to know exactly how much my family might need. Your donation will help my family pay for rent, repairs, food, clothing, toiletries, and bedding/linens that isn’t covered by insurance. Once we have a temporary address, we will also be accepting physical donations of dry goods, spare clothes, and any used furniture. Anything helps, big or small.
