Charley's Fight Against Biliary Atresia

Donation protected
Charley Beth Hazelwood has Biliary Atresia (click to find out more
www.baaware.org).  She is at the top of the liver transplant list at St. Louis Children's Hospital.  Unless a liver is received that matches her blood type by late August, Charley and her mom, Leslie, will both be having surgery in early September.  The doctors will take a portion of Leslie's liver and give it to Charley.  The two will be in separate hospitals, so family members will need to be in both places.  Charley's dad, Daniel, will have minimal opportunity to work at this time, since the hospital is two hours away from home and he will be caring for both mom, baby and Charley's big brother, John.
Funds collected for Charley will be used for costs of family living and medical expenses for the month of September.
Please pray about becoming a back-up liver donor for Charley in the unfortunate event that Charley's body rejects Leslie's liver after surgery.  She can accept B or O type livers.  Please contact Leslie if you feel your liver might be a good match for Charley.

Charley's Story

At just three weeks of age, Charley was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia after having severe jaundice.  This disease affects one in 15,000 babies born in the United States and has no cure.  It is most common in females and Asian babies.  Upon diagnosis, Charley and her family spent ten days at St. Louis Children's Hospital for her to have Kasai surgery to try to repair ducts that would connect her liver to the intestines. It was an unsuccessful attempt and her liver remained non-functional.
While Charley is a fun loving, sweet spirited, smiling baby girl, there have been several challenges that her family has had to face over the past eleven months.  Charley usually has between 8-12 loose stools a day, which requires a special prescription diaper rash creme and a LOT of diapers!  She has to be on several different vitamins which often end up in her stool.  In May of 2014, Charley was diagnosed with Rickets disease when she broke a femur bone and had to wear a cast. Rickets is a vitamin D deficiency which causes brittle bones and will cause a delay in her crawling and walking abilities. She also relies on a feeding tube to help her gain weight.  After having 33 ounces of formula a day (and 3-4 cans of expensive formula per week), most of it still ends up in her diaper, and keeps her from gaining weight.  Even though Charley doesn't absorb much baby food, she still enjoys it along with finger foods each day!
We believe that every baby is a blessing from God and has a purpose and plan on this earth.  Please join with us and pray these scriptures over Charley's little life that she will have a BIG impact on everyone she meets!

Psalm 139:13-18
For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
How precious to me are your thoughts,God!
How vast is the sum of them!
Were I to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand—
when I awake, I am still with you.
Prayer:  Thank you, Lord, for creating Charley!  Her condition has never been a surprise to you.  Thank you for equipping her family with everything that they need in order to care for and love her.  We pray blessing, protection, strength, life and good health over her body today and always.  May Charley reach her full potential in life that you have created in her! May the Hazelwood family be blessed, have adequate finances, and be without need for anything!  Amen.

Isaiah 40:28-31:
Do you not know?
Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary,
and his understanding no one can fathom.
He gives strength to the weary
and increases the power of the weak.
Even youths grow tired and weary,
and young men stumble and fall;
but those who hope in the Lord
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we thank you that you are our Creator, the everlasting God.  We speak strength and perseverance over the Hazelwood family and in Charley's life.  May they each have an abundance of faith, hope and love through this time and may their strength be renewed.  Bless little Charley and allow her to continue to SOAR through anything that is sent her way.  Amen.
