The Arctic Circle Residency 2015

HELLO! I'm a visual artist based in Knoxville, Tennessee. I have been invited among a few selected artists and scientists to participate in The Arctic Circle residency program in June 2015 and I couldn't be more excited for the opportunity. For three weeks the other residents and I will sail together on an ice class barkentine tallship exploring Svalbard , a High Arctic archipelago just ten degrees from the North Pole, observing, creating, and collaborating as we go.
During my time in the arctic , I will continue my research into landscape, both natural and architectural, looking at the evidence of remains, and of new beginnings. I am invested in this liminal moment, when despair and hope reside simultaneously. Intrigued by the irrevocable shift in one’s sense of self in relation to place, that occurs after the illusion of stability ceases to exist, (especially after natural disasters.)
I will be taking my tiny porcelain houses with me, and photographing them in the icy tundra, and remains of settlements. I will be writing, collaborating, and letting the experience guide me to new avenues of making and thought.
Even though I have been awarded a position on this ship, the cost of this amazing residency is $6200.00 not including the travel expenses to and from my home base in the states, appropriate winter weather gear, and art materials, that I will use during my stay.
Any contribution made toward fulfilling this trip of a lifetime, will help me in developing new bodies of work, and giving me oppurtunities to exhibit and speak publicly about my time, making and documenting in The Arctic Circle.
