As some of you may already know, our sister Kathy Burns has been recently diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer. Triple negative breast cancer can be aggressive and difficult to treat and occurs in about 10-20% of all diagnosed breast cancers. It usually affects younger people, African American, Hispanics and/or those with a BRCA 1 gene mutation.
The goal of this fund is to help Kathy remain in her Los Angeles apartment near her oncologist and treatment center. It will also help fund any out of pocket medical expenses not covered by her insurance and assistance with transportation to and from her doctor’s appointments and cancer treatments when friends and family are not available.

Over this next year, Kathy will be undergoing aggressive chemotherapy, mastectomy and reconstructive surgery, a second round of chemotherapy, as well as radiation treatment. Her ability to continue to work is, and will be, very limited for some time.
A bit about Kathy…..She is 55 years young, one of five very Irish “Burns Girls”, right smack in the middle as #3, and has always been the ‘favorite’ sister of us each. She is warm, funny, a ball of energy, kind, tender hearted and passionate about those less fortunate, particularly children. She opted to delay her treatment several weeks to participate in a breast cancer study that would not benefit her but those in the future diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer.
Kathy is fiercely loved by her sisters, family, and friends. And while she doesn’t have children, she has always loved and cared for her niece and nephews Sean, Matthew, Kevin, and Melissa, as if they were her own and is equally loved by them in return.
Kathy is a graduate of Mater Dei High School, Long Beach State University, and has been working on completing her work hours for her MFCS master degree for the past two years.

Sisters' thoughts:
Colleen: Kathy is my Sabrina and I am her Samantha (bewitched). We shared a room together growing up. We worked together at the same restaurants while attending high school and college together. She was my maid of honor at my wedding as I was hers. She has always been there for me and my children. I cannot image life without her.
Debbie: Kathy was my roommate growing up when she and Colleen fought, and we lived together on and off throughout my college and our single years. She has been my confidant, my old soul to go to advice for, one of my best friends. Love her dearly.
Marybeth: It is hard for me to express the relationship I have with our middle sister Kathy, as we have laughed, loved, and lived together in life. Forever in my heart regardless of where our life paths have taken us, we have always stayed in contact.
