Dear friends,
This is my 5 year old niece Mila.
Several months ago she was diagnosed with one of the rarest forms of occlusive cerebrovascular disorders encountered in neurosurgery. She was diagnosed with Moyamoya Syndrome (Bilateral Moyamoya grade III/IV Suzuki).
Moyamoya syndrome is a disease in which certain arteries in the brain are constricted; blood flow is blocked by the constriction, and also by blood clots. Fragile blood vessels proliferate around a blocked artery in an attempt to bypass an occlusion. Their appearance on a cerebral angiogram resembles a "puff of smoke" or "Moyamoya," a term coined by a Japanese team who first described the disease in 1950’s. It can affect both children and adults usually with symptoms of TIAs, strokes, headaches and seizures.
There is no effective drug treatment for Moyamoya disease and surgery is aimed at bypassing the blockage with another artery to restore normal blood flow. Myamoya is a progressive disease and if not treated with surgery it can lead to repeated strokes and severe functional impairment or even death.
Mila already suffered a stroke that affected left front side of her brain. She also suffered several smaller episodes of atypical febrile seizures which temporarily affected her movement and impaired her ability to speak.
Since there is neither medical institution, nor a doctor in Serbia that can treat her condition she requires medical intervention abroad.
Closest medical hospital that can help Mila is in Zurich Switzerland (www.kispi.uzh.ch).
Total cost for 2 surgical procedures costs 157.000.00 Swiss Francs ($US 162.000.00).
We are currently running a similar fundraising in Serbia as well as in Montenegro and the rest of Europe so together we hope to reach the goal.
