Film has the power to change lives. To communicate hidden truths. To tell stories that need to surface.
One day, I was driving down a lonesome two-lane highway in South Dakota. It stretched for miles ahead of me and behind me. There was no one in sight. While I was feeling particularly hopeless and alone, the beauty of the landscape took my breath away.
Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted this incredible hollowed out tree in the distance. I pulled my car over to the side of the road, scrambled for my camera, and started shooting.
Later, when I got onto Instagram I posted this:
"On Facebook, I tagged this tree with my name. As I stood on the side of the road, the only human being for miles in this vast expanse of natural beauty, I shared a bond with that tree. There she was, alone, standing glorious. Maybe hollowed out and empty from harsh seasons past that ravaged her core, but she lives on powerfully to beautify and inspire. My friends on social media have been saying recently that we are all connected electronically for the first time in human history. In that moment, gazing at that tree, it validated what I have known all my life. We are all connected in ways much greater than we imagine. ✨"
The next day, I launched Glorious Alone Productions.
I learned a lot from my first experience with filmmaking. Most notably, that I was good at the role all filmmakers have in common– raising money. My goal with GAProductions is to help filmmakers get stories on screen that need to be made. Stories that need to be told. Unvarnished, fearless.
The first film I produced is literally influencing the narrative about how we talk about, think about, and deal with domestic abuse in our communities. Despite all the rookie mistakes I made with this film, it's succeeding with its original goals. I still get calls all the time about the film. And the award-winning writer Jess Hill, just produced a 3-part documentary series based on her book, SEE WHAT YOU MADE ME DO . This best-selling book features the High Point case study as one of the solutions to domestic abuse.
There are millions of women's stories out there. Let's film them.
