Global Glimpse-Nicaragua

Half of the world’s population--more than 3 billion people--live less than $2.50 a day, greater than 1.3 billion live less than $1.25 a day, and studies have shown approximately 1 billion children worldwide are living in proverty. The rate of children dying due to poverty is 22,000 per day (according to UNICEF). Poverty is not a lifestyle, it is not a choice, it is the absence of necessities, and it is the death of  innocents.


    Living in a world full hopes, dreams, and possibilities, I have been surrounding myself with only half of the world’s reality. My name is Apryl Chiem and I am a 17 year old that attends Evergreen Valley High School. Global Glimpse, “a highly selective, structured leadership program that launches motivated US high school students from a wide range of backgrounds into a fascinating, life-changing international experience”, has given me the once in a lifetime opportunity to witness the other half of our world’s reality. The reality that most of us shy away from understanding, the poverty of others in need of our assistance. I will get to witness the conditions of countries with fewer opportunities and less fortunate circumstances. Through this program I will travel to Nicaragua to experience the depths of their culture, lifestyle, and hardships. During this 16 day journey, I will tackle the social, political, and economic challenges that are within our world.

    This educational experience will cultivate leadership, self-exploration, and global citizenship. I hope to come back with a new outlook on life to tackle on the current problems surrounding our society. I would like to embark on this program to become a part of the bigger picture and familiarize myself with the truth of poverty. The cost for this trip is $3450 and it would be greatly appreciated to receive any amount of donations to allow me to undertake the rare experience this program has to offer. I promise that you are not investing in only a two week trip.  You would be investing in the start of my lifelong commitment towards changing our world. I will continue to utilize the knowledge that I have gained from this trip to further my possibilities of engaging with the harsh realities we must face.
