Hi there, my name is Glenn Wilcher I’m a licensed barber, father, and veteran. I've been a small business owner since 1996, father since 1991, and veteran since 1981. I have a beautiful family that I've supported since my wife and I have decided to start a family. I've had minor setbacks such as a Tropical Storm Allison that flooded my barber shop and home, major accident in 2003 that took me out of work for 9 months, various medical bills throughout the years with my children, and most recently Hurricane Harvey that flooded my barber shop with 3 1/2 feet of water. None of that compares to the double whammy my family and I experienced in 2020.
As many others in 2020 I experienced a job loss. In March, the government ordered all none essential businesses to shutdown due to COVID-19. My family and I were okay during this time, but on May 27th, 2020 my life changed permanently, I suffered a major stroke. That night as I was relaxing on my patio, I experienced an unusual feeling where I was unable to feel the left side of my body or speak. I attempted to make my way in but I lost my balance, fell, and I was unable to get back up. One of my daughters found me shortly thereafter in the grass. With the help of my wife and daughters they were able to get me into the house. My wife, a nurse, noticed the symptoms and gave me an aspirin and rushed me to the hospital where I spent 4 days and racked up over $40,000+ of medical bills along with being deemed disabled. Recovery has been difficult learning to walk and using the left side of my body again with the help of my family. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to work as before even with the government allowing me to reopen my barber shop. As a barber, I rely heavily on the use of both hands and since my stroke it's been very difficult getting around let alone cutting hair.
I have been very fortunate to have my friends and family help me during this difficult time, but my livelihood of being a barber has been crippled. Sadly with the government shutdown and having a stroke during this time has left me and family in a difficult spot where I'm unable to provide and keep up with the medical bills. Any support whether it be prayers or financial support would be a greatly appreciated.
