Glenn's Level 4 Coaching course

Donation protected
We are Shinbudo a young, community based, judo and wrestling club based in the Alexandra and Ainsworth Estate (in NW8 0SW London).

We are trying to raise funds for our judo coach’s UKCC Level 4 Course. Our coach is Glenn Spiers and he is, quite simply, amazing.

Sure, as a BJA 5th dan, he knows his judo. And as a Level 3 Coach, he certainly does know how to pass his knowledge on. He is, after all, one the top judo coaches in London, teaching in places such as the Budokwai (the oldest judo club in the world outside Japan), Carlson Gracie London (where he also trains BJJ, holding a brown belt), and Imperial College Judo Club. But this is not what makes him amazing.

When, in 2014, a small group or residents from our estate decided to set up a judo club to provide an outlet to engage the younger residents in our area, there weren’t many coaches willing to embrace the challenge. Why would they? We had no mats, we could just about put together a ‘team’ of three or four shy (but super keen and energetic) kids, and our piggy bank had enough cash to get us, at best, a couple of taster judo classes - put our postcode in the latest Multiple Deprivation Index search engine and you’ll find out we are located in the 10th top percentile in terms of income deprivation in the UK.

Glenn, unlike many others, not only embraced that challenge but transformed (yes, TRANSFORMED) the project into a successful reality, where anything between 30-50 kids train regularly and safely in judo and, no less importantly, play, jump, fall, get up, win, lose, cry, laugh, focus, learn to trust and respect each other and themselves, and understand that effort, commitment, community, and passion inevitably lead to great things.  Glenn traced a path that has benefited, and will continue to inspire, hundreds of young lives in one of the poorest parts of London.

So, some three years down the line we are now trying to give something back to Glenn by helping him raise some of the £6,210 necessary to pay for the 3-year Level 4 Course that he needs to progress in his own chosen path: coaching. We are seeking to raise 1/3 of that sum through an ‘Awards for All’ grant application (that would also allow us to start a 2nd weekly judo class for our keenest kids), and the remaining 2/3 (£4,140) through crowdfunding.

So, please, if you can, give generously to this cause and rest assured that for every penny you put into it, Glenn’s energy, passion, and generosity, will return it tenfold to us and the widen judo community.

Please feel free to address any enquiries to us.

Thank you!
