Glenboro Doctor Recruitment

It's no secret that rural areas of Canada are lacking doctors, and Glenboro, Manitoba, is no different. We are a rural village in the Westman area of SW Manitoba, and the community serves as a hub to the agriculture-based villages and neighbouring municipalities.

We have an 11 bed hospital, attached to a residential care home, which, up until now, has provided local health care. Located at the intersection of highways 2 & 5, we are 10 km south of Spruce Woods Provincial Park, and the Glenboro Hospital has traditionally served the area with three doctors and a team of the best nurses and support staff anywhere.

Unfortunately, doctors age, and move elsewhere, and in the past three years, we have lost two of our three doctors. This has put our facility at risk of closure, and we know that, like many other rural communities, if this happens, it could very well mean the end of our community altogether.

Taking a page out of other rural community's books, we decided to do whatever we had to in order to bring doctors here, and keep our medical facility open and serving the public. We have been fundraising, and have so far raised nearly $20,000 of the $100,000 required to recruit a qualified physician through a professional medical recruitment firm.

We now turn to the broader public. While we continue to fundraise locally, and intend to continue to do so, we are in a race against time. We need to raise the necessary funds to recruit qualified medical staff before we lose our facility.

Our hope is that those who read this will understand the need. Being an agricultural community, we must face the reality of farm-related accidents; living at the intersection of two provincial highways, there are always road accidents to worry about; our proximity to a provincial park with many back-country type activities and a very active campground brings with it medical emergencies; and, our demographic includes a lot of retirees, and they require local medical care. Lastly, we want our community to thrive, now and in the future, and attracting new residents requires that services, including local health care, be available.

We know that this is a problem being faced by many, many Canadian communities, but we hope that you will see the value in helping Glenboro at this time, so that we can stay strong, and retain the services required to help others.

We thank you in advance -- absolutely every little bit helps us toward our goal of keeping health care available in our community.
