Glasgow Tool Library Start-Up Costs

The Glasgow Tool Library is a social enterprise that operates like a normal library, but instead of sharing books we share tools. We will be based at Civic House, North Glasgow and are hoping to open in October but we need your help!

The GTL team has been voluntarily working year-round to organise and catalogue a range of tools and we’re delighted to say we are really close to sharing these with you – we just need some support to get the library up and running.

Before we open we need to ensure that GTL is a safe and practical space for our volunteers to lend tools from – so we need some basic renovations to a used shipping container that will act as our main service point. All money donated will help us get the necessary elements in place before we open; this includes suitable shelving, lighting, heaters, dehumidifiers, boxes, materials to build a secure workstation and entrance desk, PAT tester for necessary safety testing, consumable bits, tool repair, laptop, printer and materials needed to create our membership cards. We want to open the Tool Library as soon as possible and your donation will go directly towards helping us achieve this goal.


The Tool Library was started to challenge the unsustainable relationship between use and ownership and to provide people with the tools they need to improve the objects, spaces and places that matter to them. We collect donations of tools from those that no longer use them, repair and care for them, and save them from going straight to landfill. Creating a community resource also helps to save people money by providing access to tools that they might not otherwise be able to afford. We also hold talks, workshops and events on topics such as DIY, the sharing and circular economy, sustainability, zero waste, and craft.
