In Memory of Richard Filc

Donation protected
In honour of Richard’s life, his family and friends would like to carry his work forward and prevent any more addiction related deaths. We see how happy Richard was over the past years, especially over these last few months. He was excited about his future and more importantly, all of the people he was able to have such a strong impact on. This is why his passing has been so hard. People that struggle with addiction tend to hide it from those they care about because of the stigma that surrounds it. This stigma must be broken. People that struggle with substance use disorder did not choose to have this illness. They must be met with compassion and understanding so that they feel safe enough to reach out for help. We strongly believe that if Richard had not been alone on that Wednesday night, he would not have died. He would have been given the precious gift of time and another opportunity to be on the journey of healing once again.

The outside requests to donate towards Richard’s funeral expenses have been overwhelming and we thank you for that. Our family and friends are working on a project that will include building a supervised consumption site in Hamilton in Richard’s name. This site would provide a safe and hygienic environment for safe consumption and prevent opioid related deaths. We know that this will have a significant impact on the substance abuse problem in the area because so many are suffering from this illness. Safe consumption sites have been proven to help people recover from their substance abuse and save a father’s, mother’s, brother’s, or sister’s life.

Help us to continue Richard’s work through this project, which will afford others in his position more time, and the proper resources to get the help that is needed. Thank you to everyone for sharing a love for our dear son, brother and friend, Richard Filc.
