My name is Norm McGillivray, I hope you have watched my video behind what my motivation is for helping the vulnerable here in Australia.
If not, the very short version is, my Dad was in his early 30's and a successful businessman when he was hit by a massive stroke which left him paralysed and heavily impeded, it ended his business, the marriage to my mum and in short he found himself on the streets of London homeless in the 1970s. He died when I was 11.

I need your help, your help to address a massive issue here in Australia. So here goes:
Australia 2018:
Imagine if you will, having to sleep on a bench, on concrete pavement or even under a bridge day in day out. It’s hard to contemplate, isn’t it?
Yet over 8,000 vulnerable people here in Australia do this every night.
The aim of Beddown is to help and make a significant impact on as many of the vulnerable people around Australia as possible by providing a bed for them to sleep in.
The way we intend to do this is by activating pop-up accommodation in underutilised spaces, spaces that are commonly used during the day but are then left empty at night.
The first space we will be activating pop-up accommodation in will be in Car parks, yes, I did say Car parks!
The average car park bay measures 5 meters long by 3 meters wide, so each bay can easily fit 2 / 3 beds if necessary (As can be seen in the demonstration in the video). Car parks are in all major cities across Australia and are therefore easily accessible by those who are vulnerable.
There are many great Car park facilities across Australia and they are great as they can be quickly set-up to offer safe, secure and comfortable accommodation and can be easily taken down with minimal disruption.
We are partnering with Australia’s largest car park operator, Secure Parking, who operate over 600 car parks across Australia and New Zealand. Secure Parking will be working closely with us to conduct a trial of Beddown pop-up accommodation in Brisbane CBD car parks.
Other spaces such as community halls also offer a great opportunity to be re-configured into pop-up accommodation in the evenings. We are currently exploring working with other Non-Profits and Charity organisations to also potentially activate these spaces in regional locations.
Sleep Deprivation:
The effects of sleep deprivation can cause both physical and mental health-related issues such as:
• Depression
• Diabetes
• Hypertension
• Obesity
• Memory Loss
• It can also impair cognitive function and lead to alcohol or drug use.
• Those who sleep rough are security conscious too in fear of being attacked and their possessions taken.
Benefits:
We believe offering a pop-up solution will benefit those who are vulnerable on a number of levels.
Our guests:
- Will get to spend the night in a secure, comfortable and safe environment.
- Will have access to a bed to sleep in
- Will be treated with dignity and respect
- Will have access to other Beddown complementary services i.e. shower, laundry, food and beverages offered through other awesome providers
- Will be able to have the opportunity to have a yarn with our volunteers and not feel isolated
- Will have the opportunity to be able to be understood and then referred to other service providers for longer-term accommodation solutions
- Will not be constantly being disturbed and asked to move on to other locations trying to find somewhere to sleep.
- Will have improved physical and mental health by getting a good night’s rest.
We believe the best way to help the vulnerable isn’t by tackling the issue alone, that’s why we are looking at working with other Not for Profits and Charities that offer complementary services such as laundry and showering, food & beverages, clothes and longer-term services to help transition these vulnerable people into permanent accommodation.
By collaborating with others to help those who are vulnerable and transition them all the way through to a longer-term solution is the way forward.
With your donations:
All the funds donated will allow us to buy beds and supplies along with the hiring of facilities such as toilets/showers for the trial, organising and training Volunteers.
Donations will also allow us to formally set-up Beddown as a Not for Profit/Charity, and pay for insurances, licenses etc.
We really appreciate you giving us your trust in our mission, and by allowing you to follow our journey not only gives you the confidence, but you can see the impact your contribution is having directly.
We are trying to raise the funds as soon as possible to allow us to firstly establish Beddown as a Not for Profit / Charity, insurances, permits, licenses etc. which will then allow us to activate these spaces formally.
The aim is to get Beddown established and trial/pilot in early 2019 in Brisbane CBD.
Following the trial, we will look to refine and learn from any lessons prior to rolling out wider across Australia.
The more we raise above our goal will only further assist us in getting Beddown truly off the ground and helping more people.
Beddown targets those who are at the very beginning of the cycle and most vulnerable by bringing them into safety, security and comfort whilst then linking them to the appropriate services to get them off the street and into longer-term solutions.
Our two foundations and principles in creating Beddown to help the vulnerable are
1. We believe everyone deserves a bed to sleep in.
2. We must first repair the quality of life, before helping build a life of quality.
