On March 29, 2016, Barry Williams' murder conviction was overturned by U.S. District Judge David O. Carter after spending over 30yrs in San Quentin  State Prison.  Judge Carter used terms such as corruption and prosecutorial misconduct to describe the handling of this case. The lead prosecutor, Carmen Trutanich, is currently being investigated and facing disciplinary action by the State Bar of California. Mr. Trutanich used tactics such as coercing witnesses, creating false evidence and also producing false witnesses to give false testimonies in order to win this conviction. Absolutely all of the evidence used to convict Mr. Williams was materialized out of thin air.

Mr. Williams is a son, a father and a grandfather who has spent most of his life as a prisoner of a broken system. Unfortunately, this case represents a common theme amongst the citizens of L.A. County. After the conviction was overturned by Judge Carter, the L.A. District Attorney's Office decided that Mr. Williams and his family hadn't suffered enough. They decided to appeal the verdict, in order to coverup their corruption and to save face  of one of their own; Carmen Trutanich. Mr. Williams is currently awaiting the appeals process.

How You Can Help

Mr. Williams is currently being represented by a "public defender," appointed by the same people that placed him in prison. Two years have passed since Judge Carters' verdict and Mr. Williams is still awaiting the Districts' Appeal. During this period of time, there have been approximately 10 court hearings, in which the DA's office has continuously stalled the process. The public defender is not equipped to handle a case of this magnitude. He has admitted to not being knowledgeable of how to file a proper motion for dismissal nor compelling the courts to move forward. He has refused help from the team of federal attorneys that helped Mr. Williams achieve the overturned verdict. We are asking for any contribution, great or small, to help us procure appropriate counsel for Mr Williams so that he is not failed by the system a second time. Thank you!!
