Giving students a chance

Hello, friends of education!  


My name is Lindsey Richmond, and I am an Intervention Specialist.   I work in an off-site Day-Treatment program, with Middle School and High School students who have experienced trauma of varying degrees of intensity.  I work with an AMAZING team of Mental Health providers that help guide students into a successful recovery. 


This year due to COVID-19 there were a lot of budget cuts to all educational programming and has left me with a budget of $33.33.  Not for a quarter, but an entire academic school year.   For those of you who aren't great shakes at math it breaks down to this, 33.33/9(months of school) =$3.70 per month.  I have 16 students so divide $3.70 by 16 that comes to 0.23 per student, per month.  And because I work with a private company I don't have access to the store Crayons2Computers.  This is why I am reaching out to you for help.  


Education isn't a one size fits all approach.  My students are unique, creative individuals who have been pigeon-holed as "bad kids" or "those kids." But that isn't the case, student's like mine had behaviors of teachers, with good intentions, unintentionally shame them into the belief that they aren't deserving of being in the classroom.  I am working hard to undo that misconception.


Since the beginning of the school year, I have made it my mission to give each student the attention and respect they deserve.  And through my efforts, my student greatly looked forward to their academic time.  What have my students learned you might be wondering, I'm glad you asked!

In the upcoming Quarter 2, I am wanting to give students the opportunities to do projects related to real-world scenarios, Nailed- It styled Gingerbread House competition, protecting themselves from the Opioid Crisis, creating a curriculum for car maintenance(brake changes, how to not get ripped off during an oil change, etc.)   What each kind of insurance means, class novel, reading bills, and learning about trades careers.

The remaining money will be put towards building STEM/STEAM kits and buying the food for nutrition.  Any extra money will be put into a savings account that will allow me to purchase curriculum from TeachersPayTeachers.Com  I have many students who have specific interests such as learning to Sew, understanding the Cold War, how the minds of Serial Killers work, becoming a Tattoo Artist or owning their own business.  Many other creative teachers have created worksheets and powerpoints for me to share with my kiddos but it all costs money too.   Please let me know if there is a specific curriculum you would like to purchase for my class and I can teach it on your behalf.
