Giving Bruce & Sharon Desveaux a hand up❤️

Hi everyone..my name is Shanna and I’ve
started this GoFund Me page for my step
dad and mom Bruce and Sharon Desveaux. 

Bruce and Sharon lived on Goodyear Road
in Napanee and had for quite a few years.
Bruce was employed as a truck driver with CAT out of Napanee. 

After coming back off of a trip Bruce had
mentioned to mom about his buttocks
being sore and it being painful for him to
drive.
Mom noticed that he had a red spot on one
side of his buttocks and being that Bruce
was a diabetic decided to take him in to the
L & A hospital to get it checked. At that
time the doctor thought Bruce had an
abscess and sent him to KGH for further
evaluation. 

Once at KGH, the doctor cleaned out the
abscess, packed the hole and then said he
could go home. Mom asked the nurses if
Bruce could stay over night for observation
but was told no.
She was told that he would be sent home
with 2 very strong antibiotics and that he
would need to be re-evaluated over the
course of the next couple of days by
ParaMed. Due to the strong nature of the
antibiotics Bruce developed a very bad
case of diarrhea. Over the course of the
next 24 hours Bruce’s condition
deteriorated rapidly. 

As per the doctor’s instructions mom took
Bruce into the ParaMed office in Napanee
to get his dressing changed. The nurse
couldn’t believe that the doctor hadn’t
scheduled a home visit in the condition he was in. The nurse changed his dressings and said that shewould make a home visit the next day.

When the nurse showed up the next
morning,she couldn’t believe the condition that Bruce was in. She then instructed
mom to call 9-1-1. The ambulance
transported Bruce, my mom and the nurse to L & A hospital. While waiting for the
doctor, mom had overheard the nurses talking about Bruce’s rapidly deteriorating condition and that they feared he had
contracted necrotizing fasciitis (flesh
eating disease). 

Due to a shortage of ambulances Bruce
was made to wait at L & A hospital until one
became available to transport him to KGH.
Once they finally arrived at KGH, Bruce
was put through a battery of tests and
rounds of doctors who eventually decide
that surgery was their best course of action and his best chances for survival. Bruce
was in surgery for hours while they tried to remove all of the diseased tissue. To think
this all started over an abscess the size of aquarter and by the time this first surgery
was done the doctors had to remove his
entire buttocks (both sides). Bruce had no
idea the extent of the damage the fasciitis had done. It had ravaged his buttocks in an unimaginable way and he wasn’t out of the woods yet. 

Over the next several weeks Bruce had to
endure more surgeries as the fasciitis was
spreading. This time it had spread to the
bone. The doctors did their best to try and
keep ahead of it. And as if this wasn’t
horrible enough news, during this last
surgery Bruce suffered a spinal stroke and
is now permanently paralyzed from the
waist down. 

During this same time mom was travelling
from Napanee to KGH every single day to
help care for Bruce. As Bruce had been the
only one employed funds were getting
stretched thin with mom trying to pay the
household bills as well as gas for travelling to KGH, parking fees and any food costs
she might incur while she was at the hospital.

Unfortunately, due to Bruce not working
his benefits were in jeopardy of being
cancelled. Mom made an agreement with
Bruce’semployer to keep paying their portion of the benefits which equaled to $250/month but eventually she had to face the inevitable. So in June of 2019 Bruce’s
benefits were terminated which meant all of the extra financial assistance to
accommodate Bruce at home were gone.
Mom turned to other institutions for help
to accommodate the house, her vehicle and for when the time came that Bruce would
be able to come home but unfortunately no one could help them. 

Bruce’s condition had improved some what
that he was moved from KGH to
Providence Care to help him learn to
strengthen the upper part of his body so that he could sit up on his own and learn to
transfer himself with no assistance. After months of physiotherapythe doctors
determined that he had reached
the limit as to his upper body strength 
unfortunately his core strength wasn’t
strongenough to hold him sitting up and he still wasn’t able to transfer himself. 

Now there was talk about Bruce coming
home. Mom knew she had some huge
decisions to make. She knew that she was
in no position financially to make the
necessary accommodations to the house
for Bruce. She also knew there was no way they could financially afford to stay living in their family home. A place they had called
home for almost 15 years. It was at that
time she decided to leave their home and
move to Amherstview.  She needed to be
closer to Kingston for Bruce. He needed to be closer to all of the immenities that
would make it possible for him to be home. So at the end of September we packed
mom & Bruce’s life up into boxes and
moved them to Amherstview. 

Against mom’s wishes Bruce was released
from Providence Care in October.

Unfortunately he wasn’t home to stay.
Since October he’s been admitted back
into KGH ICU four times due to infections which lately seem to hover over him like a
black cloud. His last admittance to KGH
was just before Christmas. He had
contracted C-difficile and had sepsis. He
was released from KGH on Christmas Day. 

This has been an emotionally, financially,
physically and mentally draining year for
my parents. Due to the severity of Bruce’s health concerns anything could change at a
moments notice. I started this GoFund Me
page as a way to help the financial burden.

Bruce has numerous medical appointments
to attend and because they don’t have an
accessible vehicle mom has to hire a cab for
every appointment which costs $80-$100
each trip and that’s just to Kingston.

In the meantime they’ve put their home in 
Napanee up for sale in hopes of selling it
to pay the mortgage off and hopefully help purchase a handicapped
accessible vehicle. It’s not financially
feasible for them now to be paying on both places.
