Giving back to those that saved my limbs

Donation protected
Hello, my name is Jonnas Guerra, unfortunately, I was involved in a couple of incidents this year that left me with life-changing injuries. I am doing this sponsored walk in order to raise money for the hospitals that cared for me.

The what and why of this campaign:

I was unlucky enough to manage not one but two life-changing injuries during this oh so lovely year. During the early hours of new years day, I was unfortunate enough to be a victim of knife crime. The stabbing resulted in two of the major nerves in my arm, the ulnar and radial nerves, being severed along with my tricep. I underwent two surgeries at St. Thomas' hospital and so far have managed to recoup most of my movement and strength, however, there is still a long way to go.

As if that weren't enough, fast forward to June, and in a bit of a freak accident, I suffered major burns to my lower legs. I underwent multiple surgeries at the Chelsea Westminster burns unit in order to save my leg, and then major reconstructive surgery at St. Mary's in order to give me a functional leg.

Having spent about two months in the hospital this year, I wanted to do something to give back to all the doctors, nurses, and porters that worked so hard to save my limbs and are working day in and day out to look after our country during these terrible times.

I was recently cleared to begin physiotherapy for my leg and I am currently having to re-learn how to walk. So I decided to do this sponsored walk of 20 miles in 20 days (2020 get it?) in order to raise money for the hospitals that cared for me. I plan on dividing the money evenly between:

The Chelsea and Westminster burns unit
The St. Mary's Plastics department
The St. Thomas' plastics department

Details of the sponsored walk:

I will be aiming to walk one mile every day for 20 days (this will start on Monday 16th November and go until the 6th of December). Every day I will be aiming to improve my speed, posture, and technique as well as trying to lessen my reliance on crutches. On the 21st day, I will do a big challenge in order to see how far I've come. Due to the uncertain nature of my injury and its recovery timeline, it is hard to say for sure what this challenge will be but currently, the ideas for it are:

- A speed mile, after setting a base time on the first day, I will set a target time to achieve by the challenge day

- To walk around my block (~400m) without crutches, I can currently only walk about 10m without them so this is a pretty big challenge

- To walk 20km in one day. This would be a pretty sizeable challenge even without my injury but I hope that after my 20 days I will be in a position to attempt this challenge

I will also be setting an extra challenge of doing 20 pull-ups in one go on the 21st day. These challenges will help encourage me and benefit my physiotherapy.

I will be posting daily updates of my progress and lap times to my Instagram @j.a.o.g and to my Facebook @jonnas Oliveira Guerra. I set my goal to £1000 because I wasn't sure how successful this would be, but I really hope to raise as much money as possible for these wonderful hospitals so it would mean a lot to me if you could donate or at least share this gofundme with friends and family.

Thank you all so much,

Jonnas
