Hi lovely humans,
As a child, I spent a lot of time visiting charities with my mom, and I never really understood it. As i got older, I found myself drawn to wanting to make a difference in the world, wanting to give what i think to be the most precious commodity ever, time, to those who didn’t have the necessities or luxuries I grew up with.
My journey found itself in Cambodia two years ago, where I taught English at an HIV orphanage. Where the children didn’t have enough money to buy lice medicine, and so cockroach spray was used on their little heads instead. Where 30 kids were sharing 3 towels, and the girls couldn’t wear bras because they had grown out of theirs and didn’t have money to buy more.
It also took me to Peru, where I was helping at a girls orphanage, where the little girl with special needs was going to be held back from school because the organization couldn’t afford her school uniform.
Having grown up in countries like Nigeria, Venezuela, and India, poverty was all around. But seeing all this first hand as an adult really changed my life, as much as I went to help theirs. At first, I thought I would volunteer once a year in a different country, but because of work, I could only do 2 weeks, and it wasn’t nearly enough time to make the difference in people’s lives. So, here I go - 6 months to Latin America.
So why this GoFundMe page?
I found myself putting together little ‘packages’ for the kids of things they didn’t have. Basic things. Towels tops pants underwear thermals, whatever they needed. I quickly realized, I couldn’t on my own, give them as much as they needed for a somewhat basic life.
In the next 6 months, I will be going to a number of organizations. When I asked, they mentioned that the kids need things like clothes, backpacks, sandals, classroom furniture – things that we don’t even think twice about having and buying.
We can collectively make a larger difference in these kid’s and families’ lives than just me alone.
If you would like to contribute whatever little or as much as you’d like, it will go a long way. I will endeavor to share pictures and stories to let you guys know where you have helped these little souls, and how.
