Over the past 26 years Michelle has been passionately teaching elementary school. She as given so much of herself to other families and now we have a chance to be here for her and help her family.
Starting early August, Michelle was having flu like symptoms...this lasted a few weeks until her family realized that she had something far worse going on.
Michelle picked up a virus internally which masked itself like the flu, truth be told, it was causing extensive damage to the tissue on her left buttock. In addition to causing problems there, the infection traveled to her left foot. What started as a sore, rapidly grew into an open wound that lead to gangrene setting in.
To make matters worse, Michelle is a type 2 diabetic and when she was admitted into the hospital her sugar levels were dangerously high. As a result of all the complications with diabetes and the virus, Michelle has had seven surgeries, including a left foot amputation and most if not all of the tissue removed on her left buttock.
Having spent the past three weeks at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth, getting the infections cleaned out and under control, she still has multiple skin graph surgeries as well as getting fitted for a prosthetic in her future. The good news is that Michelle is doing well and this past week has been relocated to Deer River Hospital. Here is where she will spend the next several months in occupational therapy. The blessing is that Todd and the kids are close and will be able to assist in her recovery.
Given Michelle's recovery will be extensive, she has been put on long term disability and is expected to be out of the classroom for most if not the entire 2018-19 school year. Even with insurance coverage, bills will accumulate and the cost of the rehab center covers the first 20 days, which when then be charged at a rate $150 daily.
