Many of you know, are friends with, have had a drink with, and shared life with our great friend James Martin. In 2013 James was diagnosed with throat cancer after a visit to his doctor. He bravely fought the disease. After Chemotherapy and surgery, he beat the cancer.
In July of this year; almost 5 years after the original cancer, James started to feel flu like symtoms and pain in his side. He saw his doctor and after an ultrasound in July, tumors in his liver were discovered. James was diagnosed with a rare liver cancer called Squamous Cell Carcinoma. In a nutshell, it is NOT a good cancer to get in your liver.
After a CAT scan and Biopsy in September, James and his family began Chemotherapy treatments once again in October. To date, James has gone through two cycles of Chemotherapy which have span 96 hours each. Because of the prior treatment in 2013, James also suffered what is called "radiation recall," which is a severe reaction that occurs when certain chemotherapy drugs are administered during or soon after radiation treatment. This caused him to be hospitalized, placed on IV, and he has had a feeding tube inserted. At his worst he dropped down to 158lbs, and is currently working his way back up.
Last week, James did more scans to see if the cancer shrunk or died. His results were the exact opposite. The cancer had grown and multiplied.
So what now? James is currently scheduled for Immunotherapy which will hopefully "reset" his immune system to fight the cancer. Each treatment is about $15,000 before insurance. The family is in the process of qualifying for additional assistance which will help reduce the cost, but this is not a guarantee and could take a while to get approved. He may also have options to participate in clinical trials and possibly other therapy alternatives on the mainland.
