<div>Afgelopen jaar, in November 2024, hebben mijn vrouw en ik een korte vakantie genoten in The Gambia. Voor ons was het de eerste keer dat we dit land bezochten en we hadden eigenlijk geen idee wat we aan zouden treffen. We waren op zoek naar een zonnig land en wilde daar een korte vakantie doorbrengen om wat tot rust te komen van de hectische tijd die we daarvoor hadden meegemaakt. We kwamen dus uit bij The Gambia.

<div>Wat we daar aantroffen heeft ons hogelijk verbaasd! We zijn reizigers die wel wat gewend zijn. Zo hebben we veel reizen naar het verre oosten gemaakt naar landen die, evenals The Gambia, ook niet ‘rijk’ zijn. Denk aan Vietnam, Laos, Cambodja en Thailand. Maar niets heeft ons zo verbaasd als The Gambia. Het land is echt arm, met een gemiddeld inkomen van 100 tot 200 Dalasi per dag, omgerekend 1,5 tot 3 Euro per persoon, is het een van de armste landen in Afrika. Daarnaast heeft het land bijna geen natuurlijke bronnen en moet het voornamelijk hebben van pinda-oogsten, visserij en toerisme.

<div>Om toch uit de armoede te kunnen komen is scholing erg belangrijk en dat is nu net waar het behoorlijk aan schort in het land. Een groot gedeelte van de bevolking is nog analfabeet en kunnen dus niet meer doen dan fysiek hard werken om uit de financiële problemen te blijven. Toch zijn het mensen met een positieve insteek, het heet daar niet voor niets ‘The smiling coast of Africa’.

<div>Tijdens onze vakantie hebben we kennis gemaakt met Lamin Cham, een officieel opgeleide toeristen gids. Wij hebben samen met hem een aantal tochten gemaakt door The Gambia en tijdens één van die tochten hebben we ook een bezoek gebracht aan een schooltje waar jonge kinderen taal, rekenen en nog wat andere basiskennis werd aangeleerd. In Nederland zouden we dat een beetje kunnen vergelijken met de basisschool.

<div>Tot onze verbazing vertelde Lamin dat deze school zijn eigen initiatief was en dat het was opgericht op een terrein dat hij van zijn moeder had geërfd.

<div>Het gebouwtje was niet meer dan een paar houten palen voorzien van metalen golfplaten en gaas als ramen. Het grootste probleem waar Lamin mee kampte was het feit dat het hout werd opgevreten door termieten waardoor het gebouw op termijn gaat instorten. Door de slechte omstandigheden van het gebouwtje, waren er al een aantal ouders die hun kind van deze school had afgehaald. De vraag is nu of die kinderen elders zijn ondergebracht, want nog steeds geen veel kinderen niet naar school.

<div>De grote wens van Lamin Cham is om het houten gammele schooltje te vervangen door een stenen of betonnen gebouw. Echter hem ontbreekt het aan de financiële middelen om dit te realiseren.
</div>
<div>Hoewel het bedrag dat nodig is om een gebouw in The Gambia neer te zetten helemaal niet hoog is, is het geen bedrag dat ik zomaar kan betalen. Ik heb Lamin bij vertrek beloofd dat ik mijn best zou doen om te kijken of ik het bedrag op één of andere manier zou kunnen verwerven.

<div>Bij terugkomst in Nederland heb ik eerst gekeken of er bestaande organisaties waren die iets zouden kunnen betekenen. Er is contact gelegd met ‘Stichting Schoolproject Gambia’ maar zij kunnen voorlopig alleen iets betekenen op het gebied van levering schoolmaterialen zoals schriften, pennen en dergelijke. De wat grotere organisaties zoals ‘Wilde Ganzen’ doen echter alleen zaken met andere organisaties zoals stichtingen of verenigingen. Dit is een particulier initiatief en dat ondersteunen zij niet.

<div>Lamin Cham heeft reeds voorwerk gedaan voor zijn wens van een nieuw schoolgebouw. Er zijn tekeningen en er ligt een globale berekening van de kosten. Aangezien de grond waarop gebouwd zal gaan worden reeds in het bezit is van Lamin gaan de kosten over het realiseren van een stenen/betonnen gebouw.

<div>Op dit moment is de raming dat de kosten van het gehele schoolgebouw ongeveer 50.000 Euro zou zijn. In Nederland krijg je daar een kleine serre voor. In The Gambia kan een eenvoudig schoollokaal met 6 klaslokalen worden neergezet. We gaan echter in fases het gebouw ontwikkelen. Enerzijds is dat om de uitgaven goed te bewaken, anderzijds ligt het streefbedrag dan lager en is het een realistischer doel. We beginnen met 20.000 Euro waarvoor 3 klaslokalen kunnen worden gebouwd. Daarna kijken we verder hoe en wanneer naar een volgende fase kunnen gaan.

<div>Last year, in November 2024, my wife and I enjoyed a short holiday in The Gambia. For us it was the first time that we visited this country and we actually had no idea what we would find. We were looking for a sunny country and wanted to spend a short holiday there to relax from the hectic time that we had experienced before. So we ended up in The Gambia.

<div>What we found there really surprised us! We are travellers who are used to quite a lot. For example, we have made many trips to the Far East to countries that, like The Gambia, are also not 'rich'. Think of Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand. But nothing surprised us as much as The Gambia. The country is really poor, with an average income of 100 to 200 Dalasi per day, converted to 1.5 to 3 Euro per person, it is one of the poorest countries in Africa. In addition, the country has almost no natural resources and depends mainly on peanut harvesting, fishing and tourism.

<div>In order to escape poverty, education is very important and that is exactly what is lacking in the country. A large part of the population is still illiterate and can therefore do nothing more than physically work hard to stay out of financial trouble. Yet they are people with a positive approach, it is not for nothing that it is called 'The smiling coast of Africa '.

<div>During our holiday we got to know Lamin Cham , an officially trained tourist guide. We made a number of trips with him through The Gambia and during one of those trips we also visited a school where young children were taught language, arithmetic and some other basic knowledge. In the Netherlands we could compare that a bit with primary school.

<div>To our surprise, Lamin told us that this school was his own initiative and that it had been established on land he had inherited from his mother.
</div>
<div>The building was nothing more than a few wooden poles with corrugated metal sheets and wire mesh as windows. The biggest problem Lamin faced was the fact that the wood was being eaten by termites, which would eventually cause the building to collapse. Due to the poor conditions of the building, a number of parents had already withdrawn their children from this school. The question now is whether those children have been accommodated elsewhere, because many children still do not go to school.

<div>Lamin 's big wish Cham is to replace the wooden rickety school with a stone or concrete building. However, he lacks the financial resources to realize this.
</div>
<div>Although the amount needed to build a building in The Gambia is not high at all, it is not an amount that I can just pay. I promised Lamin when I left that I would do my best to see if I could somehow acquire the amount.

<div>When I returned to the Netherlands, I first looked to see if there were existing organisations that could be of any help. Contact was made with 'Stichting Schoolproject Gambia' but for the time being they can only be of help in the area of supplying school materials such as notebooks, pens and the like. The somewhat larger organisations such as 'Wilde Ganzen' however only do business with other organisations such as foundations or associations. This is a private initiative and they do not support it.

<div>Lamin Cham has already done preliminary work for his wish for a new school building. There are drawings and a global calculation of the costs. Since the land on which the building will be built is already in the possession of Lamin, the costs are for the realization of a brick/concrete building.

<div>At the moment the estimate is that the cost of the school building would be around 50,000 Euro. In the Netherlands you get a small extension for that. In The Gambia a simple schoolroom with 6 classrooms can be built. However, we are going to develop the building in phases. On the one hand, this is to keep a close eye on the expenses, on the other hand, the target amount is lower and it is a more realistic goal. We start with 20,000 euros for which 3 classrooms can be built. Then we will look further at how and when we can move on to the next phase.
