Give Salman Wings to Fly to Safety

Salman is a young Hazara man from Afghanistan who has been living as a refugee for most of his life – first in Pakistan and now in Indonesia. A group of volunteers in Vancouver and Whistler want to bring this strong, brave young man to Canada, so he can finally start to build a life for himself.
The Hazaras are a minority ethnic group who facing ongoing persecution from the ruling regimes in Afghanistan. Salman’s father and brother were both tortured and killed by those in power. After the death of his brother, Salman’s mother and uncle encouraged him to try to find a safe country to live in. In 2014, he ended up making his way to Indonesia where he has been recognized as a refugee by the United Nations, but he is not allowed to work, go to school or have any sort of normal life.
Despite the desperate circumstances he lives in, Salman has done his very best to be positive and healthy. He started exercising and learning about the value of working out. Now he offers fitness classes to other refugees living with him in Indonesia. Salman has taught himself English and he is ready to start a new life in Canada. He will be moving to Whistler where he will be provided with a job and accommodation on his arrival.
Salman has been recognized as a refugee by UNHCR (United Nations High Commission on Refugees), so he is eligible to be sponsored to come to Canada under the Private Sponsorship program. Under that program, sponsors are required to raise enough funds to support Salman for the first 12 months after he arrives. The current amount required for a single person is $16,500.
The money raised will be held in a trust account with two signatories until Salman arrives. At that time, the money will be provided to Salman to assist him during his first year in Canada. If for any reason, Salman is not able to come to Canada, the funds will be used to support him in Indonesia until he is able to find a permanent home.
