It’s December and that can only mean one thing: Whamageddon.
If you’re familiar with the rules of Whamaggedon, then you don’t need them explaining. If you’re unfamiliar with the rules, then you will need them explaining, so here they are:
- Whamaggedon starts on the 1st of December and ends at midnight on the 24th of December
- The player must go as long as possible without hearing Wham!'s Christmas song, "Last Christmas"
- Only the original version of "Last Christmas" applies, the player can listen to remixes and covers of the song
- The player is out as soon as they recognise the original version of the song
Last year, I only got as far as December 4th before being eliminated by Lorraine Kelly (long story). This year, to save me from tears, I want to survive longer. Not only that, I want to raise money and give it to someone special.
Alice Thompson and Josh Littlejohn set up Social Bite in 2012. Social Bite run five sandwich shops across Scotland, employing people who have been homeless and provide free meals for people experiencing homelessness and food poverty. Their Sleep In The Park campaigns have raised millions of pounds to help bring an end to homelessness in Scotland and they have inspired a global movement to tackle the problem across the world.
So my idea is simple: if you’re playing Whamageddon this year, put aside a pound each day you survive. When you are eliminated, donate that money to Social Bite and help fight homelessness.
Not only will you be raising money for an amazing cause, but it raises the stakes when playing the game. An early elimination will only cost you a fiver (min donation on the site), but if you survive until Christmas Eve, then Social Bite get a £24 donation and you get to feel like a great person.
