Those of you who don't know, Hazel was hit by a driver going way too fast down a tiny side street as she was crossing the road with Matt last night. They were going to the store to get some food for breakfast the next morning and move his car back into the driveway; and I told him to take her so she didn't bark when he came home and possibly wake the baby up. The guy that hit her barely missed Matt and Hazel was only a few feet behind him. She always stopped to smell the roses, if you will. Always. He hit her hard enough to send her flying through the air, which Matt witnessed with his own eyes as he turned around after he heard the terrible sound the impact made, only for her to roll a few yards down the street where she landed unable to stand or move afterwards. Matt carried her to the house, completely in shock and utter disbelief that this happened on that little side street, in our little quiet town, right next to our house, mere feet from his car, their destination. We called Tufts who sent us to Cummins Animal Hospital in North Grafton. Hazel was brave and strong the whole time. I almost wonder if she was doing this for our benefit knowing how much we love her and how much of a mess we already were. When he got there they originally gave him an estimate of $600 - $800 that quickly escalated to $3000 and then today landed at $4000. We were able to come up with $1000 in the middle of the night just so they would treat her and keep her comfortable for the night. The vet called this morning and gave me 2 options. Option 1 was an MRI and possibly surgery which I had already made up my mind that I would not put her through because there was a possibility she still wouldn't regain full mobility of her hind legs. She would have to go through a long recovery period and physical therapy. It just wasn't something we could see ourselves putting her through. She's already aging and she's too tired for that. That option landed at a whopping $14,000. Option 2 was to wait and see if what was wrong with her legs was just as simple as inflammation around her spine that could correct itself in a few days. But they would need to keep her at the hospital and THAT bill came to about $1000/day. They would give her inflammatory medication, antibiotics, a catheter for the time being, and everything else needed to keep her comfortable.
I am just asking for a couple days to see if she improves. If she doesn't then I know what I have to do. It wouldn't be fair to her, after everything she has done for me and our family, HER family, to not give her this chance. I am fully aware we are in the middle of a pandemic and a recession of sorts so I am really not asking for much. Even a positive vibe or prayer thrown our way would be appreciated. I am being realistic though. If she doesn't show any sort of improvement within a day or 2 I absolutely will not prolong her suffering. But I need to give her a chance to fight. I NEED to do this for her. My daughter is drawing pictures and planning a get well party for her. She knows what happened but she is 4 years old so she doesn't fully comprehend the situation. I just want her to have a couple more years with Hazel. That dog loves our children so much we have thought sometimes she maybe thought they were her puppies when they were babies. So, here I am swallowing my pride and begging for someone, anyone, to help a member of our family have the chance to fight another day. I only wish I was able to do this on my own. But we didn't plan for this. We didn't foresee something like this ever happening. Hazel was always responsible when it came to going into the street. Her being hit by a car was literally the last thing we ever imagined would happen to her.
Thank you for reading and if you donated, thank you so so so much for that. And if you have time, please send a positive thought or prayer our way. We will take anything at this point. And finally, if you knew Hazel personally, thank you for being her pup friend.
