Help Give an Angel Her Wings

On Thursday, November 16, 2017 Callie Hobbs a happy then thirteen-year-old girl suffered a terrible accident at home during her evening bath. Callie, was rushed by ambulance to Grady Memorial Hospital where she has spent months in a medically induced coma in Grady’s Burn Unit ICU with severe 2nd and 3rd degree burns over 40% of her body.
Tragically, to complicate matters more, during the first 24 hours in the ICU doctors discovered a previously unknown blood clot in her right leg which had become aggravated during treatment and her leg had to be amputated above the knee. Callie is still in critical condition but stable. Doctors are having to keep her heavily sedated while her body heals.
As of day 163 since the accident, Callie has already undergone over 21 surgeries with extensive skin grafts for her burns. Callie will remain in the ICU at Grady for at least another 3-4 weeks. The hope is to move to Children’s at Scottish Rite for inpatient rehab for several months.
Callie’s family and especially her mom, Karen Reedy and her father Jay Hobbs have selflessly devoted their lives to caring for Callie. The extremely rare Angelman Syndrome disorder causes significant developmental delays, lack of speech, seizures, and walking and balance disorders. Individuals with Angelman syndrome will require life-long care.
Day 179 - Callie Is Home
As you can imagine, caring for a child with Angelman Syndrome is incredibly challenging, even more so when accommodations must be made at both mom’s house and dad’s house. Both Karen and Jay will now be faced with many new challenges in caring for Callie as they try and embrace this new normal. With Callie’s amputation, extensive rehab and wound care for burns, many of those challenges and additional expenses are still unknown.
Karen’s close friends and colleagues want to do whatever we can to ease the burden for this family as we know of some things that will be needed including installing lifts at home and in their vehicles, retrofitting each of their homes and bathrooms with ramps and accessibility when Callie returns home from treatment.
