<div>In May 2024, my dear friend <strong>Alyssa Garfield</strong> received a heart transplant that saved her life — but the journey since then has been unimaginably difficult. Following the transplant, Alyssa faced severe medical complications that nearly took her life again. She spent an entire month in a coma. When she awoke, her body had already endured far more than anyone should.

<div>Alyssa’s kidneys failed. She developed gangrene in both feet and her dominant hand. She now lives with a catheter and a colostomy bag and receives kidney dialysis three times a week. Over time, she endured multiple amputations: three fingers, all toes on her left foot, and her right leg below the knee. Alyssa has also developed cataracts and can now barely see.

<div>Today, Alyssa is completely disabled and has spent one year confined to hospital beds and nursing homes. Despite her condition, Medicaid coverage is still pending and could take up to another year from now to be approved for her ongoing care — including the prosthetic limb she needs to go home and regain even the smallest sense of independence and dignity.

<div><strong>Alyssa cannot leave the nursing facility without a prosthetic leg. She cannot walk. She cannot sit in a chair. She can barely see. She has been lying in a bed for one year with no idea when she will be able to go home.</strong>
