Free2b Girls Universe

Free2b Girls works with regional communities to establish networks of support for girls aged 10 - 16.

Our program begins with weekly groups - spaces where girls can be themselves  - relax, talk, eat, create, go places, cook, dance, write, take photos - whatever makes them feel inspired. Our first group began in St Helens Tasmania and we now have 4 groups in Tas, and the beginnings of 2 in the SW of WA. Groups are run by volunteer women from the local community, after school for 2 hrs once a week.

From these Free2b groups opportunities arise for girls to connect with their community - organise events, do work experience, go on excursions, participate in workshops.  A primary aim of Free2b Girls is to encourage the girls aspirations and motivations to find a place in the world.

We also aim to enable healthy, creative relationships with digital and social media for teenage girls . From experience we have found that if problems arise in our groups they often involve social media.

Our current project is creating a digital platform to inspire constructive and creative online engagement, where girls can express themselves and their ideas in a way that is honest, constructive, safe and fun.  This will be achieved in the form of a web-app which will enable the girls and facilitators of Free2b groups to communicate within their groups and across groups and share aspects of who they are and what they do with the wider world. 

We'll call this space our  'Girls Universe'  and we'll have blogs, video capability, secret girls group pages, events information, photos, artwork, the capacity for each group to crowdfund for projects  - the visions are endless and growing all the time, which is why we need a universe to contain it all! 

Our web/app designer will be working with the girls in our 4 North/East Tasmanian groups to create this universe so  that it meets their needs and can handle the enormous amount of energy the girls are ready to share. He'll be visiting our groups in term 4 to workshop the project with the girls and Free2b facilitators so that it becomes a universe everyone feels they belong to and have participated in creating. 

Funds raised will be used to pay for web/app design workshops, development services  and other costs associated with the project.

15% of funds raised for any Free2b Girls Project is always put aside to support Free2b Girls volunteers who contribute their own resources to make things happen.
