Girls school & nunnery Nepal

Donation protected
At a time when women and girls all over the world face persecution and lack of access to education and basic human rights, Tsoknyi Nepal Nuns provides opportunities for girls and nuns in Nepal.

Who am I?
I am an Australian Buddhist woman passionate about women's rights particularly in disadvantaged countries such as Nepal.

I am inspired to raise funds and the awareness of Australians about the wonderful work being done by the Tsoknyi Gechal Ling Nunnery and girls school on Chobhar Hill outside of Kathmandu, Nepal.

Why Education?
Studies have proven that education is the single best deterrent to tragic exploitation of girls in Nepal.

Nuns are respected by their villages and by Nepali society because of having received an education and for their advanced Buddhist studies

The Tsoknyi Gechak LIng Nunnery embraces education all the way through a nun’s life. It begins with a primary school, currently teaching 135 young girls a full secular education.

Nuns then proceed through a period of advanced education and must pass a test in order to enter the Shedra, which is a nine year Buddhist college.  Nuns receive training for Three Year Retreat and continue to receive teachings their entire life. Some of these nuns will become teachers in their own right.

At TGL anyone young girl or woman who wishes to become a nun is welcome and at anytime she may also choose to leave. No-one is forced to come or forced to stay. The door is open. Coming & going is a natural part of life.

Monastic vows are not taken until at least age 18 and a small percentage of girls will elect to not continue.

The Project
The immediate goal is to fund the completion of building projects at the Tsoknyi Gechak Ling Nunnery.

The building project includes six new buildings:
- A Primary School and Dormitory for young girls
- Nuns Shedra and Residence
- Nuns Three Year Retreat Building – The Pema Chödrön Retreat Center
- Kitchen and Dining Hall
- International Meditation Center
- Shrine Hall and Main Temple
