There is nothing a girl can’t do!  Millions of girls around the world are out of school, simply because they are a girl. GEC works with local change makers to drive social change through the power of girl’s education. Girls Education Collaborative (GEC) grew out of a group of committed, thoughtful people from Buffalo, NY, who saw an opportunity to partner with a locally led effort in an underserved area to provide safe, quality education for girls. The GEC mission is to facilitate social change by equipping marginalized, at-risk girls with education, skills, and agency to realize their fullest potential. We do this through deep partnerships with locally driven initiatives in rural, under-served areas of the global south. The Kitenga Secondary School for Girls On 1,000 acres in a remote village in northern Tanzania, Africa, where life is hard and poverty is generational, a transformative project is underway: quality education and life skills for girls who need it most.  GEC’s first project is with the Immaculate Heart Sisters of Africa, in Kitenga Village, Tanzania. While the Sisters had an ambitious vision to build the Kitenga Secondary School for Girls (KSSG), they were unable to attract necessary attention and support from the global development community. Recognizing an extreme need in the region and opportunity to align with a local change-agent, GEC locked arms with the Sisters in 2012. This proved to be a critical and pivotal partnership for IHSA, as together with GEC, they built the school and opened doors five years later. GEC was able to bring much needed resources, planning expertise, and thought partnership to jointly carry out the Sisters’ vision and create an outstanding residential school for some of the world’s most marginalized girls. Today, GEC’s partnership with the Sisters continues to thrive. One hundred girls currently attend KSSG, and this number will grow by 40% in January 2020. We are seeking donations to help these amazing young women obtain athletic equipment for their sports programs.
