Girls Adventure Camp

Donation protected

We are Andrea and Reya and we are working to create a space for girls to try new activities and connect with each other in Costa Rica.

Our goal is to encourage, inspire and motivate young ladies to get active and to experience activities they may not otherwise have the opportunity to try.

There are countless benefits outside of the obvious health and fitness gains that youth get from active living. Some of these skills include, building their will to put in effort during sport and outside of it, learning to work within a team, and a big one is learning to have a good attitude. As an athlete and a coach, Andrea, learned that the best coaches do not just teach athletic skills; they use their positive influence to instill healthy, lasting habits. Coaches can talk to kids about the importance of staying away from drugs, tobacco, and alcohol and how using those substances can detract from their ability to perform in sport and to succeed in life. By giving youth the opportunity to spend time with coaches, or other positive role models outside of school they are able to impact a child for life. Part of this camp is focused on creating these positive conversations with the girls helping them to see their potential to succeed in whatever way feels right for them.

Girls tend to be less preoccupied with how they look or act in a single-sex environment, and therefore, may be more inclined to try something new as they discover the freedom in becoming who they are. An all-girls camp can be a great place to bolster confidence as well as shift behavior. Girls-supporting-other-girls is a powerful and beautiful tool. Many girls come to camp and leave their entire home and school lives behind. Body image self-awareness can also arise as young girls start to mature. Coed engagements are an important developmental process, but having a break during some of the biggest periods of social and physical change can again be a good way for girls to really focus on challenging and learning more about themselves.

We will bring in instructors and organizations for various sport activities and we will work with local cooks to create enjoyable lunches as well as local craft people to get creative with.

A day of camp will go – meet in the morning at a central location, arrange transportation to the location of the activity. Once the activity is done we will head for lunch followed by conversations about various topics (goald setting, positive self talk, being a positive role model for friends and younger kids, ect...) and the day will end with a different craft or other form of relaxing activity.

The camp will take place in La Fortua, be 4 days long and be ran during December break - January 4 to 7th. Our goal is to keep costs very affordable for families in Costa Rica. We want to give these girls access to the amazing adventure activities avaliable in their backyard that are financially unrealistic for most local families.

The money we raise will go to various camp expenses such as -

Food/chefs
Craft supplies/instructors
Transportation for the girls
Sport activities/rentals
Admin hours for camp planning and directing

This is a trial camp that if sucessful we hope to expand on next year to create more opportunities for more girls in Costa Rica and other countries. We feel that all youth, with a focus on girls should have the opportunities for explore active living, to connect with other girls and positive role models and be encouraged to be the best version of themselves in a safe, encouraging environment.
