First Female Investor Seat for The Hatch

I have the opportunity and honor from BGSU to be the first female on their "Falcon Investor Board." You are familiar with the show, Shark Tank? Same concept, however, BGSU's event is called, The Hatch. As an investor, you bring capital to the table in order to help fund start-up businesses for aspiring BGSU student entrepreneurs. I am personally putting forth a good chunk of change (as are a few others in my network), however, we are only halfway there.
If you know me, you know I am about empowering women and helping them stand tall in who they are (hence... the heels). I am the founder of HEELS Coaching & Consulting - Helping Women Stand Tall, and Executive Director of WEN - Women's Entrepreneurial Network. If you don't know me, I'm asking you to get to know me in the next minute because I need your help. My mission is simple and very clear. To show more women that by standing tall in who they are, they can accomplish ridiculously amazing things in their life and in their career.
How did this "BGSU Falcon Investor" opportunity come about? I presented to the MBA class at Bowling Green State University (BGSU) this past December 2013. After I completed the event there was a reception for the students. The Business College Dean happened to be in attendance and asked me if WEN was going to be a part of their conference series this year. I told him I was interested in hearing more. He asked, "Have you seen The Hatch video from last year?" I had not so he cued up the one minute video. Click here to watch.
The Hatch is BGSU's version of The Shark Tank. Twelve students are picked out of hundreds to pitch their idea to The Falcon Investor Board in hopes of start-up capital for their business idea. Click here to learn more about the event. This event was wildly successful last year, however, I noticed one thing missing, "Dean Braun, where are the women?" He replied immediately with, "They are right there presenting." I paused for a moment to reflect, knowing this was not intentional nor anyone trying to keep women out of the investor sandbox. It's unfortunately... just the way it is. To Sheryl Sandberg's point in her book, Lean In, women in today's society are at a stand still. I politely responded, "No, where are the female investors?"
My phone rang two days later asking if I would be interested in being a BGSU Falcon Investor. I was told the dollar amount and I didn't even hesitate to wonder if I could find the money and support. God is at work.
By the way, BGSU holds one of the best Women In Leadership Conferences in NW Ohio. Hands down. They really do want to see more women rock out their leadership potential. They talk the talk and walk the walk, very evident by their support of this female Falcon Investor seat.
Their Women in Leadership Conference is presented by the College of Business Administration at BGSU and the information about their Women's Conference can be found on their website. The event is being held on April 3rd, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Lenhart Grand Ballroom, Bowen-Thompson Student Union. Keynote: Sherron Watkins, The Courage of Your Convictions, Former Vice President of Corporate Development at Enron as well as whistleblower of accounting irregularities.

So why am I doing a GoFundMe Campaign? Because I had one of those ridiculously amazing opportunities show up and I want to show my clients, other women in my network and even those across the country that you don't wait for opportunity, you ask for it. A lot of women are scared or lack the confidence to hear the word NO, however, if you aren't willing to hear a no, you can't hear a YES. This is an area I work on quite a bit with women in my business through, HEELS Coaching and Consulting.
We need more women speaking up because there are men like this Dean who ARE willing to listen. We just have a lot of women who aren't willing to ask. ASK and you SHALL receive. I have been exercising Sheryl Sandberg's phrase, "If you weren't afraid, what would you do?" I'd ask the Dean to be the first female seat on their Falcon Investor Board as a way to continue to help pave the way for more women in leadership across this country!
You might say, "Alicia, there are more worthy causes out there that are deserving of my money." Really? What if there is a future first female President, a CEO who could be wildly successful and donate millions to others who need it, the next Oprah, or a doctor that has a cure for cancer but she can't get there because we didn't set her up for success? Your money IS an investment toward more money for our economy and future.
Won't you help us get there? I can't imagine 30 years from now my daugther STILL running into some of the issues that exist for women in the workplace today. We can do better. One woman, one initiative at a time.
