THE MONEY:

We are very excited to be performing at the Theatre Passe Muraille Backspace. Theatre Passe Muraille is an integral Canadian hub for new work that gives voice to the next generation of artists and audiences. We are honoured to be in this historic and professional venue, and can't wait to utilize the resources TPM provides our production. But a space this nice comes with a cost, and our indie theatre company needs your investment to give emerging artists a home

100% of this fund will go towards our venue costs. Eliminating our principle expense, and contributing to our primary goal of GETTING ARTISTS PAID.

THE STORY:

Polly and Owen have nailed it. Successful in their careers and wildly in love with each other, they feel ready to take on the world. Polly has recently been promoted, and spends most of her time working, so Owen presents her with a new gadget, 'Black Box', to help her relax. But when a mysterious new technology creeps into everyone's lives, the line between physical and digital rapidly dissipates, and Polly and Owen are forced to question whether their definitions of reality and freedom are the same.

WHY GIRL IN THE MACHINE? WHY NOW?

This play explores our dependency on technology. We live a world full of new technology recording our every word, and selling our dreams back to us for profit. A reality where evolving automatization is pulling jobs from the working class, and emails and text messages send us into dangerous and dopamine-dependent loops. This play may take place in the near future, but it's rooted in contemporary addiction, and it resonates strongly with our everyday life.

NOT SOLD YET? CHECK OUT THE PRESS:

"A gripping two-hander, a piece of dystopian sci-fi in the manner of Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror... takes our present-day unease about the intrusiveness of technology and pushes it a step into the future... a high-stakes, will-she-won’t-she battle that keeps us on edge throughout." - The Guardian

"Haunting and prescient... Smith invests this world with a rare intensity... there is a solid emotional base to the piece; it has a real authenticity, while the encroaching technological nightmare rings horribly true." - The Stage

Stef is "ONE OF SCOTLAND'S MOST TALKED ABOUT PLAYWRIGHTS... SMITH'S WORK IS SMART AND THOUGHTFUL, WITH NO SHORTAGE OF SUBSTANCE." - The Scotsman

OUR COMPANY:

Seven Siblings Theatre is a Toronto based theatre collective dedicated to producing Fantastic Realism and utilizing the ideals and acting technique of Michael Chekhov. During our rehearsal process we guide professional actors through psychophysical exercises, explore the basis of the Michael Chekhov technique, and implement discoveries towards character development and the play as a whole. Operated by Will King (Artistic Director), and Madryn McCabe (Artistic Producer), we have produced over twelve projects as a collective.

Previous company projects include: Love Unbound, a retelling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet (2014), Mercury Fur by Philip Ridley (2014), Fever/Dream by Sheila Callaghan (2015), Picasso at the Lapin Agile by Steve Martin (2016), Rhinoceros by Eugene Ionesco (2016), Titus Andronicus by William Shakespeare (2016), Marisol (A Staged Reading) by José Rivera (2017), The Play About the Baby by Edward Albee (2017), Recall by Eliza Clark (2017), The Future Theatre Festival (2017), and Frozen by Bryony Lavery (2018), and our first production of From the Water by Will King (2018) at the Tarragon Extraspace.
