Gifts for Jim Carey

Donation protected
Jim Carey has been a beloved member of our community for a long time and has captured a wealth of beautiful images of all of us enjoying ecstatic dance, live music and festival merriment.  Jim has survived a wealth of health issues over the years including surviving stage 4 lung cancer in 2011 and as a result has struggled to cover his basic expenses.  Now is he faced with another almost unimaginable hurdle and needs our help more than ever.

On Thursday September 13th, Jim will have his entire voice box removed to battle throat cancer that is starting to choke off his air supply and put pressure on his carotid artery.

We will no longer be able to hear the sounds of Jim's voice.  I trust in all of the other ways we can still connect and communicate with him and know that he will still be integrated into our community attending dances and capturing beautiful images.  After about a year of healing, Jim may opt to have a device implanted in his neck that will allow him to start to explore making noise through an opening there.  It will take a lot of time to heal and to retrain himself to make sounds in this new and foreign way.

For now the focus is on eliminating the cancer and saving his life.  As he heals from this surgery he needs our help to cover his basic expenses as he begins to explore the possibility of collecting disability or other avenues for support through the government.  If you have any experience in advocating for or obtaining this type of aid, please contact myself, Jim Carey or Scot Robinson with any helpful information or action steps we can take to support him beyond this small community fundraiser.

Please donate what you can.  It all adds up.

With deep gratitude,
      Sarah Barrick

A small share from Jim himself....

"In the late 70’s, I attended Art Center in LA for both illustration and photo. Used to go to shoots at Norman Seeff’s studio who shoot album covers for Joni Mitchell, Fleetwood Mac, and other luminaries of the era. Seeff is still active by the way, just got in touch. But I still remember how he shot his sessions, and incorporate some of his techniques even now. I loved his portraiture and so many others of the time I got to meet through the prestigious school, like Avedon.

Since that earlier foundation, I’ve been instilled with not only a love of great imagery, but compelling portraits are a passion of mine like no other. Maybe the near brushes with my own imminent demise since surviving the stage 4 lung cancer in 2011 has been a catalyst to reflect the,… details of the lives I see around me, the people I see,… their faces, and their spirits. Feels like its,… my own heart and soul sometimes."
