In July of 2016 at our 20 week ultrasound, we were informed that our baby had transposition of the great arteries (TGA) and VSD (a hole between the left and right ventricle). Essentially the TGA means that Jax's pulmonary valve and aorta were switched.
Jax was born on December 4, 2016 and stayed in the NICU until his open heart surgery on Day 11 of life, December 15th. His surgery went great despite unexpected complications. He was transferred to the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) where he recovered. Jaxon was discharged from the hospital on December 23rd, just 9 short days after surgery. The medical providers described him as an overachiever. We describe him as brave and inspiring. He has and continues to exceed our expectations in every way.
This year we want to give back to families struggling with children who have heart conditions and are stuck in the hospital during Christmastime; parents who are torn between their sick and their healthy kids that they have to leave at home; and the children struggling to live as they spend the most special time of the year apart from their friends and family. We received many holiday gifts and cheer while in the CVICU and this year it’s our time to pay it forward.
Please join us in donating toys for children 0-12 and iTunes/Google Play Gift Cards, Xbox games etc. for teenagers (13-18) stuck in the Phoenix Children’s CVICU this Christmas. We were informed that this unit is the least donated to unit at the hospital, with the teenagers being the least donated to children. That is simply unacceptable. You see we are lucky because our baby had a fixable heart condition, but most families have children waiting for new hearts. Heart conditions are conditions that families struggle with all the time, dividing their time between home and a hospital. Please join us in making this hospital stay just a little bit better.
