Please help me send Gifted Students in Greene County from The Pete Nance Boys and Girls Club to Yale University!

ORIGINAL POST (Please see the latest update for current student info!) :

My name is Sydney Horton. I am 15 and a freshman at Lake Oconee Academy.   I am an after school tutor at the Pete Nance Boys and Girls Club and Iove working with young kids here locally--but I thought of what an amazing impact it would be to help a student of modest means but with extraordinary intellect have the opportunity to attend an Ivy League college over the summer.  I knew I could do something to make a huge difference.  There are MANY kids in Greene County, Georgia and across the country who are gifted with superior intellect and qualify for special programming through their schools, but who go without services and opportunites for a number of reasons.

So with the help of Bobby Mackey, the awesome director of our local Boys and Girls Club, we selected Kemondre Johnson.  Kemondre (Dre) is a freshman at Greene County High School and an amazing person with big dreams and bigger potential! He has become a great friend!  He is smart (gifted), kind, polite, funny and helpful.  He dreams of becoming a surgeon after studying at Duke (or maybe even Yale!)  He is growing up in a great and supportive family with his mom, Catrina who is a hardworking personal care aide and his 2 brothers, Tyrus and Jalik .  Dre and his brothers are all members at The Pete Nance Boys and Girls Club in Greensboro, GA and attend New Springfield Baptist Church.  In November 2012, the family lost nearly everything in a terrible house fire.  Luckily, everyone was okay and they have all turned the experience into a lesson of gratitude.

I worked with Bobby Mackey to designate a fund at the Boys and Girls Club for a "Gifted Scholarship".   Please help me get Kemondre Johnson to Yale University this summer!!!   You can read more about the program here:
http://www.giftedstudy.org/Residential/yale/

It is a program through the National Society for the Gifted and Talented.  Dre and I are both members of this organization.  Their site is:
http://www.nsgt.org/

Dre and I are also working hard to involve other teens and families in our very small community on our fundraising journey.  We have local pancake breakfasts, car washes and bake sales planned over the next many weeks.  I am also learning how to apply for corporate donations and learning to write grants.   We will MAKE THIS HAPPEN!!!!!  But we need your help.

Please consider a donation to Dre and other gifted and talented kids in Greene County, Georgia who will surely benefit from the summer of a lifetime.  All funds raised will go directly to the Gifted Scholarship at The Pete Nance Boys and Girls Club, which is a 501C3 charity.  Donations are tax deductible as allowed by law.

I thank you for your consideration and I know Dre and his family are very appreciative as well.  Any money raised in excess of the goal will be saved to send another gifted student (we already have a 2nd student selected!)  to a program either this summer or next summer or beyond.  This can become a long term fundraising project---but for now, please help me raise $6000.  That will cover tuition, travel and a little bit leftover for spending money for day trips and an afternoon in the Yale Campus Bookstore!  Dre and any other student who is chosen for gifted scholarship money will make a comittment to keeping this program going and will be an active part of the fundraising process this year and in years to come.  This is not a handout...this is a hand up.  We are opening a door that will change Kemondre's life.  I am so excited for him!
