Can you imagine having to wait in line behind 80,000 other people? That is the very first trial that someone who has been put on a kidney transplant list faces. The wait time? A mere 5 years, possibly even more. The numbers are daunting; more than 4500 people die each year because the wait time was too great and their kidneys couldn't hold out. Several thousands get the long awaited call but then find out that they're too ill and their body is too weak for surgery and they lose the last bit of hope they have held out for.
Carey Anderson, and his wife, Lisa are now facing these statistics. A couple whose whirlwind romance is the stuff of movies. They met in the 80's when Carey's brother had been dating Lisa's sister. Carey, a self taught innovator who designed multiple three wheeled recreational vehicles, caught Lisa's eye. Fast forward to 2006, Lisa had just moved from Colorado back to her home state of California. She asked her sister for his number and a they started talking. Once they reunited, they both knew it was meant to be. It truly was love at first sight. They married in 2007 and have 7 children between them, but now, six years later this romantic story has taken a tragic turn.
Carey is only 63, and now waiting in that daunting line with 80,000 other people; as if that wasn't devastating enough, his insurance can not cover any of the cost of the life saving care before and after the procedure. So Carey and Lisa actually have to pay to even start the process of saving his life. In fact, he isn't considered "active" on the transplant list until they can come up with $12,000.00 Once they have raised this initial amount and he becomes "active" he will need an additional $108,000.00 before the transplant can occur.
Carey could be angry and depressed about this sudden development in his story. This disease has taken the life of his father, his uncle and his grandmother. Knowing he was at risk, he was very cautious and he had regular check-ups with his doctor in California. His doctor assured him that he was fine and had several more years before he needed to be concerned. So he and his wife headed for a new life in Florida and shortly after he received his diagnosis. Almost anyone would be angry and upset about every inconvenient, scary and frustrating aspect of this situation but Carey is not just anyone. Carey, who spends 10 hours every night hooked up to a dialysis machine, instead chooses to be grateful. He is grateful to have the dialysis machine that is keeping him alive. He is grateful to have his wife, Lisa, who has stood by his side and quit her job so that she could be his primary caretaker. He is grateful to have a part time job so he can cover some of the medical expenses. Carey chooses to be grateful instead of angry or bitter. His attitude is a blessing to everyone around him. But he still needs help.
