Hello everyone, my name is Nicole Utzinger. I am writing today to ask all of you for help in raising money to cover some significant expenses for one of my dearest friends.
In early 2015, my friend Heidi Schrock became very ill. After almost a year of suffering from symptoms such as rashes, vomiting, fainting, anxiety, depression, tremors, and severe insomnia, it was discovered that her sickness was being caused by prolonged toxic mold exposure from mold in her own home. The diagnosis is called Mycosis.
Mold testing of the home where she lives with her husband and 2 beautiful daughters showed dangerous levels of 3 different types of toxic mold. Heidi continued with treatment for her symptoms, but the only way for her to have a chance to become healthy was to hire a mold remediation company to clean the house of mold- A necessary step that not only cost $12,000 but also required the whole family to move out of the home and live in a hotel while the remediation was being completed.
Although the initial remediation brought mold levels down to “normal”, Heidi continued to be very sick. Due to severe adrenal fatigue caused by Mycosis, she found herself unable to get out of bed most days. She was unable to do everyday things such as drive her kids to school, help them with homework, and attend school events. Insomnia created completely sleepless nights, at times up to 10 days in a row. Her sweet daughters suffered so much from her inability to care for them, including anxiety so crippling that they didn’t want to leave her side for fear she would die while they were away.
In spring of 2016, while still battling Mycosis, Heidi was diagnosed with Chronic Lyme Disease. It is thought that because the prolonged mold exposure had destroyed her immune system, Lyme Disease, which was likely dormant in her body from a tick bite earlier in life was able to present itself.
Chronic Lyme Disease is not often heard of but it affects hundreds of thousands of people in the United States alone. Health insurance does not recognize Lyme Disease, or Mycosis for that matter, so the majority of Heidi’s medical expenses have not been covered by insurance. Most medical doctors are completely untrained because of lack of information from the CDC (center for disease control). Naturopath and holistic doctors are familiar, but are not covered by insurance.
The average out of pocket expense for someone with Lyme Disease can be easily over $50k annually. Heidi’s has been over $90,000.
The Schrock family has really been through some unimaginably tough times in the last 3 years. In addition to the initial remediation of the house, and ongoing cost of treating Lyme and Mycosis, their home needed further remediation which included the complete tear down and remodel of 2 bathrooms (water leaks were found from improperly installed plumbing when the house was built).
In late 2017 it was decided that moving to a new home would be Heidi’s best shot of being able to heal in a completely mold free environment. Initial tests on the new home before purchase were clean, so it was a shock to all when black mold was discovered on moving day as the carpet was pulled up. This discovery prompted mold inspectors to test other areas of the home including the insulation and rim joists which have tested positive for mold.
The new home needs to be completely remediated. The cost of this remediation will be $20000.00 (twenty thousand dollars). This will not include remodeling any part of the home after it is torn apart to complete the mold remediation.
The condition of the home has forced Heidi to live in a hotel, as she cannot even walk in the home without being overcome with symptoms such as dizziness, headaches and compromised vision. Days when the weather is nice, Heidi is able to eat dinner with her family outside, but otherwise is forced to eat separate from her family in her car. As if life has not been difficult enough, being apart is really taking a toll on the Schrock family. Through all of this, they continue to be faithful to The Lord……
So while they continue to chase Jesus, let’s do our part in serving our neighbors who really need some help right now.
