GET SEÁN TO OXFORD

Donation protected
Hi!

My name is Seán, and I have an offer to read for a BPhil in Philosophy (about which, I will say more in a moment!) at the University of Oxford. Unfortunately, despite having been awarded a generous scholarship from the George Moore Scholarship program, I remain several thousand pounds short of what I need to cover the costs of the tuition & accommodation. So, I need your help. I will break down the costs below; ANY amount that you can contribute would be greatly appreciated!

 About me:

I grew up in Enniskillen in County Fermanagh, and thereafter in Ratoath, County Meath. When I was 17, I was accepted to study Philosophy in Trinity College Dublin; with the help of the SUSI grant I was able to accept that offer and start my studies. I am the first & only member of my family to attend University.

I worked extremely hard in my degree and was able to leave my job in a Kitchen when I was awarded a Foundation Scholarship at Trinity College Dublin by way of a competitive exam;  the scholarship covered my tuition, accommodation and daily meals.  I was and am extremely grateful to Trinity for offering that amazing opportunity. That same year I was awarded a Laidlaw Leadership and Research scholarship, which allowed me to work during my summers researching Animal & Population Ethics- about which more can be found here: < https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Population_ethics >  I spent the summer of 2019 researching with my supervisor at St. Annes College, Oxford; it was this experience that convinced me that the BPhil at Oxford was right for me.

I was one of the co-founders of Effective Altruism Ireland, and have been active in organising events, both for the public and in academia, to do with the question of "How to do the most good". You can find more about Effective Altruism Ireland in this interview I did with the Irish Times < https://www.irishtimes.com/culture/want-to-make-a-real-difference-give-to-a-neglected-cause-1.4160162 >  Or, on our website < https://eaireland.org/

 About the course:

The BPhil in Philosophy is a two-year graduate degree designed to prepare students for teaching a broad range of philosophical topics and is regarded as training for the DPhil (which is Oxford's PHD equivalent program). The BPhil is highly respected within the discipline of philosophy, and is regarded by some to be the best taught postgraduate philosophy degree in the world.  Find out more here: <https://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/graduate/courses/bphil-philosophy?wssl=1

Costs:

 Tuition:
£13,075 (2020/2021)
£13860 (estimated by Oriel College, 2021/2022)
Total: £26,935

Living costs including accommodation:
£27649 - £40194 (estimated by Oriel College, estimates from the University for annual living costs can be found here: < https://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/graduate/fees-and-funding/living-costs?wssl=1
So far, with the generous help of the George Moore Scholarship Program, I have raised:
£23,107.61,
This is divided into two payments of £11,553.80 (conversion from Euros to Pound Sterling are per the exchange rate as of 26-5-2020).

If I estimate living costs to be on the low end of the spectrum, at £27,000 for the two years, I am still short £30,000.

I intend to get two loans, one from the UK government, and one from a credit union, but these still leave about £18,000 - €20,000 short.
