Our friend, Narelle Kelly, is in the fight of her life, having been diagnosed with Stage 2 invasive breast cancer in early June 2019. The cancer has spread to her lymph nodes, and she requires immediate surgery and has at least a year’s worth of treatment ahead of her. Due to the severity of her treatment it is expected she will be unable to work for the next 12 months.
Narelle had only just left her full-time job of more than 10 years a couple of weeks before her diagnosis, with plans to care for her husband Ben during his own hospitalisation before she embarked on a new career path. She had not yet secured a new job before receiving her diagnosis.
Her husband Ben was injured whilst in the Australian Army leaving him permanently disabled and with chronic depression as well as many other medical conditions. Ben is unable to work, is unable to drive, requires frequent hospitalisation and ongoing care, and will require permanent use of a wheelchair soon.
Since Ben’s injury, Narelle has been the sole breadwinner for her, Ben and their 17 year old daughter. Narelle’s inability to seek employment and work while undergoing treatment for cancer is placing great financial strain on the family.
Narelle is the go-to person not only to her family, but to many of her friends, and she is renowned for dropping everything to help her friends and family when needed. Having worked in basketball administration for the past 20 years, Narelle has sacrificed much of her own time, talents, and money for the benefit of others. She is fiercely independent and never asks for help. Until now.
Money raised through this campaign will go towards supporting the family, including paying for medical bills, medication, transport, household bills, and other costs incurred whilst Narelle undergoes treatment over the next 12 months. Any additional funds raised over the asking amount will be donated to breast cancer research and support organisations.
