On Monday, August 10, Jordan and Meme brought Kobe to the ER for symptoms which seemed to be those of an infection or a cold/strep throat. It was apparent to the doctors something more was at play and after a series of blood tests Kobe’s world was turned upside down.
He was immediately taken by air Medivac to John’s Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, while Jordan and Meme drove frantically through the night to be by his side. And it was there, at 11:14 AM, when the stark reality set in for all as the results came back officially diagnosing Kobe with T-lymphoblastic Leukemia.
Jakobe Kai Washington is without question one of the sweetest souls to grace this earth, and anyone who has had the privilege of meeting his smile in person knows just how caring and giving he truly can be. He’s as athletic as he is intelligent, and his goofy and patient personality make him a friend to all. It’s impossible to understand why any child is given this burden, but it’s evident this strong-willed 8-year old who never backs down from a challenge will be fighting cancer head on.
Kobe has already endured much in this battle. Within the first few hours, he was in emergency surgery for central line/port to receive plasma parentheses and dialysis, and a peripheral line placed up his arm and to his chest to receive chemotherapy. He was then admitted to the PICU for his first 28-day cycle of chemotherapy. Now, Kobe is preparing for his next battle which is 4-6 months of intense treatments. And beyond that is a long road of treatment doctors are saying will likely be a minimum of 3 years.
There is still much to be determined on this journey toward healing. The shock of this news has turned the family’s world upside down, and with long stays at the hospital, aggressive treatments, and significant traveling, Jordan and Meme have never needed the support of family, friends, and strangers more than now. Through prayer, encouragement, and action.
Jordan and Meme are certainly strong and hanging on, but they need our help to get Kobe through the fight. Leukemia doesn’t hold back just because the treatments and medical costs are extensive, and financial impact should not be something this family focuses on. Alleviating them from the financial stress of this battle will allow them to focus their energies on Kobe, where it matters most.
