Get Kieran, Paralyzed in Thailand, Home to Canada

Kieran Macleod is a brilliant, generous, and kind human being.
Few 23 year olds live by their principles in the way Kieran Macleod has. As part of his commitment to a zero-waste lifestyle, he built his own solar-heated tiny-house outside of Toronto. He has also founded an algorithmic trading company in the blockchain space, a tech consulting firm, and played a major role in establishing a non-profit helping Indigenous communities with emerging tech implementation.
On May 12th, Kieran was in a tragic motorcycle accident in Phuket, Thailand. He was taken to Phuket Bangkok Hospital where he received emergency surgery to add titanium plates to his back, stitches to a wound on his head, and wraps to cover various road-rash injuries on his body.
He suffered a total fracture of his T6 vertebrae and is now paralyzed from his chest down. The most independent person we know now requires assistance with the majority of bodily functions and to move from his bed to a wheelchair, where he is able to sit for up to an hour per day.
Kieran has no travel insurance, and his hospital bills are extremely expensive. He thought his credit card included travel insurance, but on closer inspection that applied only to the actual flights themselves. The Canadian Embassy is unwilling to offer emergency assistance, airline insurance is obsolete, and the family’s credit cards have maxed out. His family was able to be with him for a week, but have had to return to work in Australia, leaving only his disabled mother to care for him in Thailand. Kieran and his family have paid a portion of the hospital bill to allow for ongoing treatment but still owe about $40,000. His bills are increasing by about $800 per day.
Kieran’s best option is to return to Toronto, Canada. Not only is Toronto home to an extraordinary Spinal Clinic at the Krembil Neuroscience Centre, he will also have access to free medical care under OHIP, the Ontario Assistive Devices program, and the Ontario Disability support program to assist in his recovery. Most importantly, he will have access to a support system, having attended the University of Toronto and lived in Toronto for the past several years.
To get him back to Toronto, he needs to be transported on a stretcher installed in the place of nine commercial airline seats and escorted by a specialized doctor. This transfer can be arranged on three day’s notice, but costs $47,000 which neither Kieran nor his family can afford. His family, friends, and colleagues have investigated dozens of options over the past week with the above option being the most affordable.
If Kieran is unable to raise the needed money to return home, it is unclear what his options are. The situation has become more urgent as of today, as the hospital threatened to have Kieran removed for nonpayment. His brother, Connor, diffused the situation by promising to pay 900,000 Baht within the week (about $28,300 USD).
Our first goal of 100,000 USD is enough to assist in covering the remainder of his hospital bill and to transport Kieran back home. 150,000 USD would allow him to access personal nursing services in Canada, as well as additional treatments not covered by OHIP. It would also support his family with flights to travel between Thailand-Australia and Australia-Canada as he recovers, as well as the purchase of mobility & disability aids which he will need.
This kind of transition would be devastating for anyone, but for someone as young, adventurous, and entrepreneurially independent as Kieran, this is incomprehensible. The added stress of worrying about medical bills is unquestionably hindering his recovery.
Please help us get Kieran home so he can have some measure of support and stability while he learns to adapt to his new reality.
