#getgabebackinschool has come about because it's now 14 weeks since little miracle boy Gabe has been out of education through no fault if his own. Gabe is a child with profound and multiple learning disabilities, he has an EHCP, everything needed to get him into a new special needs school. However, due to the Local Authorities in both Oxfordshire & Staffordshire failing him, he's still not in a new school, meaning he's been out of school since July!
His parents are close friends of mine, this is causing them so much hurt, anger and stress. They are hurting that their gorgeous, funny boy is losing his sparkle every day and questioning whether he's not in school because people don't like him - that's not something any parent would find easy to hear! Financially sorting this out will put an enormous strain on the family, hence this gofundme page, to try to take away part of the worry for them. This is what Gabe's parents have to say about the situation:
We are having to get a lawyer involved now to help ensure Gabe gets the education and provision he needs. This is not going to be cheap, so we're asking for your assistance with the cost of helping our miracle boy get back to school. We have really struggled with asking for this kind of help as we are fiercely independent and know that as parents it is our job to provide for our children. This is different though, these extra costs exist because of failures by the education departments of two local authorities. Both of which aren't doing very much to rectify the situation so we are having to pursue legal avenues.
All placements are filled in our local area which means that the LA, has to find him a placement out if area including private and residential schools, obviously this will cost the LA. As an interim I have asked for a tutor for Gabe and the LA are dragging their heels about that.
My husband is in the army and I work full time. If we were to keep our child out of education for a holiday or anything else we would get fined heavily!!! How is it OK for a child like Gabe who thrives on routine and structure to be treated like this. Surely this is disability discrimination?
I have sent a letter to our local MP and the Education Secretary and I've had no reply. This is our broken Social Care system. The most vulnerable people in our country are being failed everyday and sadly my amazing boy is one if them.
When Gabe was born at 23 weeks and the doctors and nurses did everything they could to save him. We promised our son we'd give him the best life he could have disabled or not. We watched him show the doctors just how amazing he is.
It feels like I'm slowly watching the sparkle in his eyes disappear as he can't go to school and be with other children like him. Gabe thinks that no school wants him because they don't like him.
